  15. Critiquing the WPA/New Deal and the west • The New Deal fundamentally changed the western landscape • Physically, environmentally, socially • Prepared the west for supporting World War II • Reinstated the federal govt as major power in the west

Critiquing the WPA/New Deal and the west • CCC employed young men in western national and state parks and monuments • AAA took land out of production, paid farmers subsidies and established federal farm aid • Soil Conservation Service helped rebuild eroded and destroyed lands, plant trees to combat dust bowl • Taylor Grazing Act opened government lands to private grazing • Bureau of Reclamation built 19 dams • WPA built roads, schools, public buildings, airports • Rural Electrification Project brought electricity to places like Rupert, ID

Critiquing the WPA/New Deal work programs • Put vast numbers of unemployed Americans to work • Increased consumption by paying wages • Drastically changed the American landscape • Contributed to American culture • Transformed government into American welfare state • Created large national debt • Supported liberal agendas and Democratic Party • Didn’t end the Great Depression!!!!!

  18. Leave that to World War II!! • WPA supports the war after 1941 • WPA soon disbanded during war production • Economy bounces back quickly during the war
