  1. The Angler Fish By: Nayeem Baksh

  2. Introduction • The Angler fish is a truly amazing animal that is often recognized for its luminescent organ, an esca, and in the movie Finding Nemo • 3 of these Angler characteristics are: the esca, the Angler’s skin, and male Anglers attaching to females

  3. The Esca • In the esca, symbiosis with bacteria creates luminous bacteria which causes the Angler to emit a blue light • This feature is used as a lure for prey, and only females have an esca

  4. Angler Skin • The Angler’s skin is reflective of blue light, which creates the illusion that the Angler is invisible to prey • Its skin is a shade of black, brown, and gray, and is has no scales

  5. Male Angler • The male Anglers are born with no digestive system, and have to attach to a female Angler, and over time the blood systems merge • These “clingy” males attach to females in order for mating and reproduction

  6. Conclusion • The luminescent bacteria found in Angler fish can also be found in Flashlight fish, and the Bobtail squid • Imagine in the future, if humans could make a light source out if this spectacular bacteria! Bonnie Bassler, University of Princeton bacterial geneticist, studying the bacteria found in luminous marine animals
