Reading journals • Following a guided reading session, during the next reading lesson, children will do their next steps work. • Other groups of children will work on other reading related activities, for example, research, character study, comprehension activities or reading for enjoyment. • This is often carried out in a reading journal. • All the work in the reading journal, the notes of guided reading sessions and other notes from reading activities within the literacy lesson contribute to the assessment of reading.

  5. How to help your children at home • Reading must be enjoyable – choose a good time and place • Beginner readers can find the process tiring – help them • Reluctant readers need good models and incentives – that’s where you come in! • All readers need good quality texts …
