  1. Styles, Conventions and Techniques

  2. Interpretive- Lady Gaga- Bad Romance • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrO4YZeyl0I&ob=av2e • An interpretive music video means it has a hidden meaning, you choose how you interpret what you’re seeing. The artist may have one reason for doing something and a meaning behind it, but wont make it fully clear, and lets the viewer make up what is trying to be said. • Meaning of video -The videos is quite symbolic and has a hidden message- Bad romance describes the darker inner workings of the entertainment industry by symbolically showing Lady Gaga as a sex slave, the music video is quite random, with unusual creative fashion and modern day religious imagery. The video is like one big metaphor the for the industry. • The main message in her video is that she’ll do anything to keep her fame, in the video she wants to live in a bad romance with the abusive music industry that causes her grief. She is aware of the flaws but she still wants to be part of it, and doesn’t want to lose her fame, as this is what she desires most, she needs fame and needs off. • Lyric interpretationher lyrics connect to music video and the meaning of her song. They also have a deeper meaning that relate to what’s she’s portraying e.g. – “ I want your ugly I was your disease, I want your everything as long as its free” you can tell straight away that what she wants is wrong and not good, but she still wants it.

  3. Cutting to the beat is when the video switches camera or shot depending on the beat of the music. This is done when editing. • In Lady Gaga’s video cutting to the beat is used, for example At 3.28-3.33 it cuts constantly on the beat, its effect in this part is to keep the pace of the music connected to the video. • Effects – Effects are when the video is manipulated afterwards when editing. • In Lady Gaga’s video Bad romance effects have been used in the scene where she’s in some sort of bath, e.g. 0.53 seconds- 0.55 seconds. Her eyes have been enlarged on her face, the purpose of this is emphasise the large eyes as it’s symbolises that she was once innocent. Also in this scene her fingers have been fast forwarded to make them move unnaturally. The colours in the video are plain and simple white a is the main colour through out the video. the effects have saturated some of the colour from filming to give it more a cold, unfriendly feel to it. • Miming and Lip sync and playback – This is when the artist mimics or follows the lyrics to the song with out actually singing them, but they make it look as if they are, as they synchronise there lips to the sound of the words playback lip sync is when the music is played whilst filming, so the artist and dancers know when to dance and the artist knows when to sing or mime the words. This make it easier when it comes to editing and matching the singing over the video as they’ll be singing at the right pace. • Lady Gaga’s uses both miming/lip sync and playback in her video, as there’s a lot of dancing.

  4. Camera movements- this is how the Camera is moved when filming. There are different ways of moving the camera, the reason for doing this is to give different effects. • In Lady Gaga’s music video there's not that much camera movement, there are close up shots and mid shots as well as long shots, however there are some camera movements, used such as a track/dolly movement, where the camera is mounted on a cart which travels with the subject at a distance from the action, in Lady Gaga’s video this is used at 3.51-3.52 seconds. Another camera movement is at 3.15 seconds when the camera circles lady Gaga, the effect of this is showing that she’s the centre of attention. There's lots of zooming in e.g. at 3.46 and lots of zooming out e.g. at the final scene 4.59-5.08 there are smaller camera movements, when the camera cuts to a persons face its slightly off to the side them moves them into frame • Camera angles - Camera angles is the position at the which the camera is filming at, different angles give different moods and tell us something about the video or the subject in the video. • There are a lot of camera angles in the video, e.g. at 3.04 and 2.05 her there are low angles this shows power. Another angle is when the camera is close to floor looking up e.g. at 2.30, another shot is from above, all these angles gives the video variety. • Lady Gaga has created quite unique character for herself but other artists who have produced similar kinds of music videos are Kesha, Jessie J and Dev.

  5. Narrative- Ed Sheeran- A team • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAWcs5H-qgQ • Narrative videois a music video that tells a story, this is usually connected to the lyrics but sometimes not. • A Team by Ed Sheeran is about a young homeless woman who is a heroin addicted prostitute who eventually passes away, this may not be entirely obvious straight away, but the meaning of the song definitely relates to the video • Lyric InterpretationThe lyrics in this song are very important, especially as it is a narrative. The music video follows and illustrates them. Some of the lyrics aren’t obvious at first and are metaphors for other things, such as “breathing in snowflakes”, this represents drugs. This makes it sound innocent and young, yet snowflakes are cold, and she has a cold life. “Struggling to pay rent, long nights, strange men” this means she is losing her grip on life through drugs, and she is spending all her money on them which is affecting her ability to pay rent, potentially selling herself off to strange men she doesn’t know. “And they say she’s in the class A team”. “They” can mean people are talking about her and putting her in a category of drug abuse. Class A also indicates she is taking class A drugs. “And they scream the worst things in life come free to us” could mean she is buying drugs to settle her addiction and it is making her life hell, but the worst things are emotions such as sadness, despair and loneliness. You don’t need to buy them, they come free and are ruining her. There are many more lyrics that can be explained and seen differently if you read into them.

  6. Cutting to the beatThis video doesn’t cut to the beat, this shows that nothing is constant in her life. • EffectsThe video is filmed in black and white which emphasizes the unhappiness of the song and how her life has lost its colour and been replaced by hurt and sadness. The only way she feels she can replace it is by taking drugs, but the is one of the reasons her life has turn for the worse originally. • At 1.48-2.07 – the scenes have been speed up but the woman who is shown at normal pace. This shows that life is passing on without her and she’s falling behind and cant catch up. Also it shows that she doesn’t matter to anyone else or noticed. People have there own lives and she’s stuck in hers. At 4.10 – 4.27 secs, the video is sped up, this shows her rush to take drugs and feed her addiction. • Miming, lipsync and playback There isn’t any miming lip sync or play back, as Ed Sheeran is only in the video for 10 seconds at 1.21-1.31 the producers don’t like this as the artist isn’t promoting himself and starring in his own video. During these 10 seconds Ed Sheeran is playing the part of a normal person walking past and buys a magazine off the young woman and then walks off, after this he doesn’t appear in the video again. The reason for this is so that the concentration isn’t on him but the character in the video and the lyrics. • Camera movements – lots of the video looks as if the camera been held as its not perfect stable movements and turns. The camera movements follow the young woman around, documenting her day. Other shots the camera is more still as if its been put on a tripod e.g. At 1.54- 2.00 seconds.

  7. Camera Angles – at 0.54-1.00 seconds the angle of the camera is low, as she’s got her back turned to us and has her arms wide looking up at the sky, this makes her look taller than she actually is and is ready to start the day. Another angle is when the camera is close to the floor following her footsteps at 1.00- 1.02 seconds, this could indicate that all she does all day is walk the streets of London. At 1.05 the camera is looking up at what’s she seeing, but from next to her, this angle makes everything look larger and taller. Also the thing she is looking at looks like a giant halo, this could symbolise she is an angle inside, or will be with them soon. Lots of the angles in this video are at eye level so we can see what she’s seeing through out her day. • Multi Image- This is when you put an image over another image. • In this video multi image had been used at 4.36 seconds which is at the end, the image of the woman is in the sky, also the sky looks for a second slightly blue this could mean she’s in a happier place.

  8. Animation- Rizzle Kicks- prophet (better watch it) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTcze-Q4Xtw&feature=fvst • Animation video- is a music video that doesn’t always look like real life, for example it could be cartoon, or stop motion, this kind of animation is a simulation of movements created by displaying a series of pictures or frames. Rizzle Kicks use stop motion and after effects in their video. • The meaning of the song is saying how one of them is bad and one is good, but they are great friends. The devil and angel idea is portrayed throughout the video e.g. 2.15-2.18 when they are standing in front of the mirror. I do not think it is completely clear what is going on unless you read the lyrics. • Cutting to the beat- It cuts to the beat, especially the camera movement and the stop motion cuts to the pace of rapping. The video doesn’t just cut scene or shot to shot but within frames. The makes it look as if they are moving to the beat.

  9. Effects are used throughout the video. They blur the images together and also use slow motion in parts e.g 2.51-2.56 seconds. They have used slow shutter speed to create images and outlines with a light, and also to create lyrics on the screen. The outlining also emphasises the band who are the main focus of the video. • Multi image- is used a lot in this video where frames and images have been overlapped in one scene e.g. at 1.34-1.42 seconds • Miming , lip sync and playback- they probably didn’t use miming in this video and just rapped as they didn’t need to because the mouth movements don’t match up to the lyrics all the time due to the effects of stop motion and the style of their video, however they could of uses used playback so they know at what pace to rap etc…. • Camera Movements- as they’ve used stop motion the camera movement is different in the video, it looks asif the camera hasn’t been held very steady whilst capturing, this gives it an even more animated feel, as it creates movement within the frames. At 1.53-2.14 seconds the camera moves as her moves. • Camera Angles – most of the camera angles are at eye level or just bellow this makes it feel as if we are standing next to them. At 2.48-2.50 seconds the camera angle is from above with he feathers falling down, this could be because of the angle idea and the feathers are falling from above.

  10. Live/in concert- Bruce Springsteen- dancing in the dark • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=129kuDCQtHs • Meaning– the meaning of the song is not about love at all but about him trying to write a new a album “ I get up in the evening and I ain’t got nothing to say” meaning he’s got nothing for his new album, no lyrics or a hit. “ this guns for hire, even if we’re just doing it in the dark” he is in the studio after dark trying to write this song… “ radios on and I’m moving round the place, I check my self in the mirror, I wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face” – Bruce kind of changed his image for the born in USA album. “ I’m sick of sitting round here trying to write this book” he’s trying to write his song “ you sit around getting older, there's a joke here somewhere and its me” meaning if he just sits around getting older the joke is on him, and if he doesn’t get off his butt and write a hit. The Audience and Bruce's fans interpreted the lyrics as a love song and completely forgot about the actual meaning to them. • Miming/lip sync/playback – he’s singing the song on stage with probably playback and then the studio version is later put over the top of his performance. But this performance didn’t capture the full intensity of his actual live shows . Apparently the audience was live and Coughtny cox was planted in the audience, you can see her at 3.19- 3.59 seconds and that was the only part that was planned other than her being pulled up on stage and Bruce’s movement on stage, however I’ve read that the audience was a fake and Bruce was sing with playback and also miming…

  11. Camera movements – the camera movements are steady and focus on Bruce Springsteen as he’s mostly in the centre of the frame as the camera moves where go’s. The different camera shots make the video more interesting otherwise it would get boring. The final camera movement is a shot at3.20-3.59 seconds is of the whole arena where the camera zooming out from the stage, this lets the views see the large audience, this also advertises his concerts and makes him look popular this will make people want to go and see him, as so many people went to view his performance… • Camera Angles there are a few different camera angles. There's an angles from within the audience looking up at Springsteen at 1.26- 1.31 seconds. this is to show what its like being at in the audience. Another angles is a low perspective looking up at him ,this is to capture all the lights that are lighting him and to make him seem tall… • Lighting- the lighting is very important in a concert performance video as, the artist has to remain the main focus, lighting can help with this by focusing lights on them and also the light create the atmosphere and mood on stage, the colours in Bruce Springsteen's video are warm and typical 80’s style, the lights are quite simple and are there to light up the stage. Bruce is constantly lit.
