  1. Intensive Prawn Farm Pond Without Sludge Removal From Bottom Of The Pond, How Is It Going? Bambang Julianto and Darrel Herbst Gold Coast Marine Aquaculture

  2. Formation and accumulation of sludge in intensive prawn farm ponds is generally perceived to impact prawn production. Sludge deposits are suspected as the site of much of the biochemical oxygen demand, mineralization of nutrients from organic matter, formation of toxic metabolites, and possibly the site of nutrient and organic matter recycling back into the pond food web.

  3. Most of Prawn farmers believes sludge accumulate on the bottom of the pond, which could cause: • Lower production yield • Less day of culture • Higher mortality rate • Reduced growth rates • Poor feed conversion ratios • Stressful environment such as high ammonia production, high hydrogen sulphide production, high nitrate and nitrite level, lower dissolved oxygen level and pH

  4. Prawns, as animal that normally live in or near the bottom are exposed to the conditions at the pond bottom. Exposure to toxic material from the sludge endanger the well being of culture prawns this can reduce feeding, decrease growth, increase mortality and possibly result in higher sensitivity to disease

  5. Is sludge or sediment a problem in the Intensive Prawn Farm Pond? • If you have sludge at the bottom of the pond, is this actually a problem?

  6. At Gold Coast Marine Aquaculture Farm, there are 4 production ponds G26, G27, G28 and G29 where the sludge have never been removed from the bottom of the pond for several years, because the bottom soil is too soft for heavy machinery such as a tractor or excavator. • Pond G26, G27 and G28 are located beside the sedimentation pond, and G29 is located beside a reservoir pond.

  7. Pond G26 (4100 m2)

  8. Pond G27 (9100 m2)

  9. Pond G28 (9000 m2)

  10. Pond G29 (5600 m2)

  11. A crop of prawns culture has been done also in the ponds, with consideration to the length of the dry out period between crops, allowed the sludge that has been exposed to direct sunlight to dry until it is cracked in the surface and air is able to penetrate through. • By drying, most of the labile organic matter remaining in the sludge from previous crop will decompose and reduced inorganic compounds will be oxidized (Boyd and Pippopinyo, 1994)

  12. Table 1. Average Production Data Pond G26, G27, G28 and G29

  13. Prawns performances • The data shows that sludge accumulation in the bottom of the pond have no clear impact on: • Prawns production yield • Prawns days of culture • Prawns survival rate • Prawns growth • Prawns feed conversion ratios

  14. Chart 1. Ponds production yield

  15. Chart 2. Ponds Days of Culture

  16. Chart 3. Ponds survival rate

  17. Chart 4. Prawns growth

  18. Chart 5. Ponds feed conversion ratios

  19. Pond environment • Pond environmental quality seems to not deteriorate quicker than other ponds • Prawn conditions are not stressed compared to other ponds • No evidence states an increase in disease incidents and mortality • Sludge helps to enhance phytoplankton bloom in the beginning of the crop

  20. Conclusion • Pond with sludge on the pond bottom still could perform as well as other ponds • Intensive culture of prawns could be done without sludge removal from the bottom of the pond, as long as sludge can be dried by sunlight, cracked and exposed to air • Soil sediments removed from pond bottom previously could be brought back to the pond and spread all over the pond bottom

  21. Aeration and water circulation encourage the movement of oxygenated water over the pond bottom, this could help maintain a good environment for the decomposition of organic matter at all times and reduce the impact of sludge to the prawns during culture • Sludge can be controlled in a natural way by creating a balanced pond ecosystem

  22. A sludge is needed, where it may supply nutrients for the establishment of the flora and biota needed to build the food chain in the earlier crop • Reduce environmental impact by excess soil sediment removed from the bottom of intensive prawn farms • Further study needed to know how much sludge is allowed to be left in the pond bottom without disturbing crop culture
