  1. What is Data Terminal Equipment (DTE)? Data terminal equipment, shortly known as DTE, is an end instrument that is used to convert user information into signals. It can also reconvert received signals. They are also known as tail circuits. Data terminal equipment device interacts with data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE). Both DTE and DCE classifications were introduced by IBM. DTE or data terminal equipmentis the functional unit of a data station that is responsible for performing as a data source or a data sink and provides for the data communication control function to be performed as per the link protocol. In general, the data terminal equipment device is the terminal, and the data circuit-terminating equipment is a modem or another carrier-owned device. The DTE needs a single piece of equipment or an interconnected subsystem of multiple pieces of equipment in order to perform all the necessary functions to permit users to communicate. A user can communicate with the DTE, or the DTE may be the user. Connections There are two different types of devices that are assumed on each end of the interconnecting cable for a case to add DTE to the topology that brings a less trivial case to interconnect devices of the same type: DTE-DTE or DCE-DCE. These cases need crossover cables like Ethernet or null modem for RS-232.
