Search by ontologies instead of keywords makes the query interface flexible and user-friendly, since users don’t have to think about keywords anymore. Ontologies suggest the search that can be made and resolve concepts to keywords behind the scenes. The portlet differentiates between annotated and non-annotated datasets and classifies them into queryable and background layers. Background layers cannot be queried and are added only to facilitate the purpose of visualization Generated resultsets can be downloaded as zip files and if the user wants can be registered with GEON catalog. Results are displayed visually as a static image. Yellow color represents the resultsets. Light grey region represents the part which was queried but had no results. Dark grey part represents the region which was not queried as it was not registered with the desired concept. Capability to display ontology based colors also exists. An interactive ArcIMS map can also be created to visualize the results Generated Resultsets can be added to user’s work area and thus can be integrated with existing maps. Generated Resultsets can be associated with ontologies as well, which can serve for fine-grained search. An interactive ArcIMS map can also be created to visualize the results Interface to Map Integration Workflow Capabilities • Datasets are queried for concepts instead of keywords. • Execute implicit workflows from portlet and handle intermediate results and failures. • Resultsets can be added to user’s personal workspace (thus can be integrated with other maps) or can be downloaded to user’s disk. • Future work includes: • Search by spatial extent. • Indexing the query, so that the resultset generation time can be reduced.
