1. Use symbols and shorthand. b/c = because w/o = without Ex = example B4 = before Min = minimum Max = maximum Gov’t = government # = number + = addition/and/also ≠ = not Effective Note Taking
2. Only write down key words and major points. But how do I know what is important and what is not? If you listen carefully at the beginning, you will know what the main topic is and the purpose of the lecture or conversation. Then, you can listen for ideas relating to the main idea. The beginning of the listening will tell you two things: • The purpose of the conversation or lecture • The main idea of the conversation or lecture • Listen carefully for the purpose and main idea, this will help you focus on the key points and improve your ability to filter out information that is not necessary. Listen for… • Signal words that connect ideas • Repeated or stressed words • Pauses between important points Signals
Reasons (because, since) Results (so, therefore, thus, consequently) Examples (such as, for example) Comparisons/opposition (on the other hand, however, in contrast) Another idea (furthermore, next, besides) Similar idea (similarly, likewise) Restatements of information (in other words, that is, basically) Signal words that connect ideas
Listen for important key words and phrases which are often… • Repeated • Paraphrased • Said louder and clearer • Stressed Repeated or stressed words
Go to internet sites (BBC, NPR, VOA, CBS News, ESL Lab etc.) • Listen to different types of lectures • Listen to lectures and take notes, then listen again while reading the transcript • Try to think of the speaker’s purpose and listen for signal words How to improve your listening skills
