  2. Presentation Purpose • Share results of the Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) • Compare and contrast Part-time and Full-time Faculty responses to CCFSSE

  3. CCSSE Overview • The Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) is a national study conducted by the Community College Leadership Program at the University of Texas at Austin • CCSSE was designed to help us assess quality in community college education; identify and learn from good educational practice; and identify areas in which we can improve programs and services for students.

  4. CCSSE Overview • In the Spring of 2005, nearly 130,000 community college students from 257 colleges, in 38 states participated in the CCSSE study. • In the Spring of 2005, 679 Durham Tech credit students, in 68 randomly selected courses, participated in the CCSSE study.

CCFSSE Overview • The Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (CCFSSE) is: • Web-based Instrument • Designed to mirror CCSSE to facilitate comparisons between student and faculty responses • CCFSSE asks faculty members to respond based on a SPECIFIC COURSE they were teaching in the Spring of 2005

CCFSSE Overview • The Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (CCFSSE) elicits information from faculty about: • Their teaching practices • Perceptions regarding students’ educational experiences • The ways they spend their professional time OUTSIDE the classroom • The ways they spend their professional time INSIDE the classroom

  7. CCFSSE Data Collection Process • A total of 169 part-time and full-time faculty members completed the CCFSSE in the Spring of 2005 • Faculty members received an e-mail invitation directly from CCSSE facilitators in March 2005 • Only faculty members teaching a course in the Spring of 2005 were invited to participate

  9. Part-time Faculty Demographics • 55% Have 1 to 9 years teaching experience • 17% First year teaching • 65% Master’s degree • 13% Doctoral degree • 62% Female; 38% Male • 73% White, Non-Hispanic • 19% Black or African American N=84

  10. Full-time Faculty Demographics • 43% Have 1 to 9 years teaching experience • 2% First year teaching • 60% Master’s degree • 16% Doctoral degree • 63% Female; 37% Male • 72% White, Non-Hispanic • 17% Black or African American N=85
