  3. What did he look like

  4. Chile before Pinochet • Chile prior to Pinochet's rule, had a long tradition of civilian democratic rule. • In 1973 a constitutional crisis occurred. • A Juanta goverenment (a military dictatorship) was set up by the coup leaders. • Pinochet appointed himself god of Chile

  5. How did he come to power? • The president predeceasing Augusto Pinochet was the 29th president of Chile, Salvador Allende. • Pinochet was quickly rising in the military ranks. • By August, 1973 Pinochet was appointed Commander in Chief of the Army by Allende Salvador himself. • Allende was killed during the coup • Many beliefs were held that Pinochet led the military coup.

  6. During his rule • As soon as the junta took power they started banning all leftist parties. Over 2000 people were killed because of political opposition and over 1000 exiled from the country, with over 30000 tortured. • Cut government spending and social subsidies, lowered tariffs, and opened Chilean markets to massive imports. • Pinochet’s free-market policies were credited with maintaining a low rate of inflation • His government implemented an economic model that had three main objectives: economic liberalization, privatization of state owned companies, and stabilization of inflation. • In 1982 and 1983, Chile's economy collapsed.

  7. Life in Chile after Pinochet • In 1988, a nationwide vote on whether or not Pinochet should stay for another term as president resulted in a majority of the people voting no. • In 1990 Pinochet stepped down as President, although he remained a Senator for life and kept his position as commander-in-chief of the armed forces. • Patricio Alywin became the president of Chile after Pinochet stepped down. • Pinochet did a lot to help the economy of Chile when it really needed help.
