  1. Trigonometry Just the Basics March 7, 2012

  2. Remember Special Triangles

  3. What about other Right Triangles?

  4. Trigonometry • If you know a side and an angle of a right triangle, then you can find out a lot about the triangle. This is how trigonometry was invented. • Trigonometry used to be a separate class in high school. Now we learn part of trig in Geometry, some more in Algebra 2, and more in Pre-Calculus.

  5. Be happy you have Calculators!

  6. Trig has 3 basic units • Focuses on different ratios to help you find missing parts of triangles. • These ratios are known as: Sine, Cosine, Tangent

  10. Trig has 3 basic units Sin A= Cos A= Tan A= Sin B= Cos B= Tan B=

  11. Find each ratio Sin A= Cos A= Tan A= Sin B= Cos B= Tan B= B A C

  12. Find each ratio Sin X= Cos X= Tan X= Sin Y= Cos Y= Tan Y= X Z Y

  13. Find each ratio Sin M= Cos N= Tan M= Sin N= Cos M= Tan N= N Q M

  14. Find each ratio Sin A= Cos A= Tan A= Sin B= Cos B= Tan B= A B C

  16. We often know what the Angles are.

  17. Some people are EVIL! • Check to fix your calculator. • Should say “deg” for degrees. If is doesn’t you are likely to get all the questions wrong.

  18. Solve for x. • Is it sine, cosine, or tangent? • Set up the equation • Solve • Round

  30. When you need to find the angle. • Sin x°= • 30° • Set up the equation • Hit the “2nd” key and type sin then the fraction (or decimal some calculators are tempermental about fractions in the trig functions) • Make sure to close the parentheses
