Agent versus AgentlessUnderstanding Agent and Agentless Technology • Agent-based technology resides directly on a managed server and collects data based on policy set locally or by the management server • Agentless technology resides primarily on a management server and gets its data via a remote application programming interface (API) • “Agentless” doesn’t mean that nothing is present or running. Some basic operating system function or base application function is running to provide the information as requested over the network • Resources are still being used and services need to be running on the server • Examples include SNMP, CIM, WMI Remote Tivoli Enterprise Management Servers “IBM Tivoli Server Managed Environments”

Levels of Agent Autonomy or Connectedness • Connected: All agents until 6.2.2 • The agent starts without requiring a connection to the monitoring server, collects and stores data while it is disconnected, and then sends the data to the server after connection. • Configuration is cached at the agent and updated by the TEMS when connected. Can also have a local config file stored as XML that is not managed by TEMS. • When connected eventing is configurable: Send through ITM infrastructure or through direct SNMP eventing • Autonomy: Optional behavior for agents 6.2.2 and above • The agent starts without requiring a connection to the monitoring server, collects and stores short-term historical data while it is disconnected, locally evaluates situations • Configuration is stored in a local XML file at the agent. • Eventing: Sends event data directly from the agent.

Workspace Gallery A “gallery” of scalable thumbnail images showing available workspaces for any selected navigator item Leverages a user’s “visual memory” of workspace layout, colors, and views • Workspaces can be selected from this image gallery • Workspace images captured automatically whenever a workspace is viewed or saved • Includes “hover” descriptions that provide name, description, and auditing information • Allows re-ordering of workspaces via direct manipulation (drag-and-drop); re-ordering reflected in existing popup and pull-down menus • Quickly accessible via new tool action and accelerator key sequence • Placeholder images provided for non-captured workspaces
