What Is Open-source Software? • Open source refers to a program or software in which the source code (the form of the program when a programmer writes a program in a particular programming language) is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge.

  4. What are some common examples? Google Chrome Mozilla Firefox GIMP Pidgin

What exactly are those examples? • Google Chrome: A web browser that allows you to freely surf the internet at your convenience. • Mozilla Firefox: A web browser much like Chrome. • GIMP: An image editing tool that allows you to freely edit and manipulate photos. • Pidgin: A free online instant messaging tool.

  7. Advantages of Open-Source Software • No cost • Reliable • Free to do with as you please • Availability

  8. Disadvantages of Open-Source Software • Must guard against information overload and alert fatigue • No single source to support all aspects of the application; multiple sources of technical and clinical support may be required. • User assumes more "ownership" of the solution than under proprietary licenses, including initiation of upgrades, enhancements, configuration and support of software.
