  1. Turning Homes into Innovation Labs- Concepts Future Beyond / Maboneng by Katharina Decker

  2. Contents • General Information • Renewable Energies • Solar power Home • Wind energy Home • Bio Mass Home • Recycling • Waste collecting Stations • Paper Home • Plastic Home • Glass Home • Organic Waste Gardens • Bio Gas Home • Sources

  3. General Information • In particular in Town Ships like Gugulethu or Langa it is essential to enlighten the people about the chances of environmental friendly living. Therefore there are 9 awesome Homesdesigned, containing experiments, information and fun to explore the future. • In a Innovation Lab you always find: • General information of the respective house on posters • Experiments, 3D-models, modern technology • A lab-like design: white walls, brightly illuminated • Guest book or other possibility to share experiences with the topic • The project is leaded by Future Beyond and Maboneng in cooperation with N(…?)Labs and EduNova. Concerning the funding, volunteer work and donations are helping a lot.

  4. Renewable Energies • Renewable energies are important to make the world a more sustainable place. • Many problems, for example pollution could be solved by using more renewables. Especiallyin Town Ships a higher usage will effect less pollution but more money left. • Worldwide renewable energies in 2009 hab with 1.230 GW a propotion of 26%. Already 18% of the worldwide power is produced by renewables (do you have got more up-to-date/ reliable figures?) • In a Township (here I need some figures about renewables and outlooks about it for Town Ships) • All in all renewables will have a main impact in future, as less addiction to fossil fuels is a great thing for our environment.

  5. Solar Power • The solar energy home has an Solar Panel on its top. • Outside the house a Electric Meter Display shows • Todays yield • Yield in total • Saved money / CO2 / other significant values • Inside the home is a Video Kiosk running mainly by solar power. • Films to show are explaining solar energy, e. g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUl1fLFY6iM • or drawing connections to other houses, e. g. the plastic home http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7X-J1DhfjE • There are also further Information about solar energy and its advantages. The message is to transport the good calculation of using the suns energy – every day.

  6. Wind Energy • The wind Energy home is a meeting point for all generation. Here one can learn about energy conversion and • The main attraction is a Produce Power Experiment, which gives a feeling of energy production and saving • It consists of a spin bike with a generator producing power • The power is fed in a column with different items to run. • To keep the kids busy, there is a Handicraft Corner, where they can tinker their own windmill. Of course it consist of recycled newsprint. • At the Wind Turbine Model the operation of craft handle is explained. • See the whole concept and details

  7. Bio Gas • Especially in Town Ships like Guguleth or Langa there is much waste, one can’t re-use or recycle. Therefore, this home wants to show a possible alternative to handle that waste. It also constitutes a connection between Recycling and Renewable Energies • The Experimentof the House is the Productionof biogas. Though it needs a few days, it is quite easy to carry out. • The festivals website also informs about the state of play, so visitors who only came once can stay in touch • Therefore an future project will be to build a Biogas Plant and develop a sustainable use of biogas or bio mass.

  8. Recycling • A we all know, that the humans are producing to much waste, we need to find another way to make the world a more sustainable place. • (Sadly I don’t know any trustworthy source for figures or diagrams for South Africa. May you paste some information?) • (other facts / figures) • Recycling is an important link in the “reduce – reuse - recycle”-campaign. Many information about general improvement in this topic is given. • Beside the possibility to collect waste there is clarification about the different types of rubbish and how to handle it. • The Recycling homes show the visitors, how easy it is to preserve the environment – every little helps.

  9. Waste collecting Station • To keep the streets clean while the Festival is running, there are several waste collecting Competitions. Prizes are e. g. (?) • In this time there are more trash bins in the street. They are emptied weekly. • In a some public place are some general waste collecting station. Mainly, the waste is be separated in • Plastics • Cans • Paper • Glass • Compost • The contact with a bigger collecting station facilitates the waste disposal.

  10. Paper • Paper is an important resource in our every-day-life. We use it for newspapers, cartons and books. It consists of trees. Wood important, so use less. • The Experiment of the house is to make own paper by hand. The dry takes a some time, but the results are amazing and you learn a lot about the background of this good.

  11. Plastics • The message of this home is outlining negative consequences of plastic and its danger for health and environment.More Information • In this house there is a Lab Area, where one can experiment with different types of plastic. • The Scenery consists of different Plastic Art items to show a way to recycle. In this house the concept is implemented, too.More information

  12. Glass • Green, white brown

  13. Organic Waste • Collect organic waste in a Public Compost • How to build a compost • The soil is used for an Urban Agriculture project • In this home, one learns how to build and use a compost. It is also a big Do it yourself Project you can try at home. • The mix of theory and practice gets people easy to understand. In this way the knowledge could gain currency. • Schedule for the World Design Capital • October 2013: start collecting organic waste • Januar 2014: Turn of the compost • May 2014: planting with compost soil • September 2014: first harvest • (I’m not quite sure about this, because a compost needs to be wet. This is a problem in summer, isn’t it?)

  14. Bio Gas • Especially in Town Ships like Guguleth or Langa there is much waste, one can’t re-use or recycle. Therefore, this home wants to show a possible alternative to handle that waste. It also constitutes a connection between Recycling and Renewable Energies • The Experiment of the House is the Productionof biogas. Though it needs a few days, it is quite easy to carry out. • Therefore an future project will be to build a Biogas Plant and develop a sustainable use of biogas or bio mass.
