  1. The Benthic Zone Chapter 11 Oceans

  2. What adaptations have organisms made to survive in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean?

  3. Adaptations • Extremely high pressure • No sunlight • Bioluminescence- create light through a chemical process (i.e. firefly in PA) • Large teeth, skulls, & stomachs

  4. Fangtooth Fish

  5. Why do you think bioluminescence occurs?

  6. Light Fish

  7. Bioluminescence • Find food • Attract prey • Defend against predators • Communication • Find mates

  8. How does it work? • Luciferase enzyme reacts with the chemical luciferin • 3rd element present (depending on organism (i.e. ATP, calcium, etc) • Luciferin + Luciferase + Oxygen + Salt  Light + Water

  9. Angler Fish

  10. Other Adaptations • Pressure- 3000-9000 pounds/square inch! • No sunlight • Large teeth, skulls, & stomachs- scientists are still unsure of why organisms have these characteristics

  11. Giant Squid

  12. Dragon Fish

  13. Gulper Eel

  14. Giant Isopod

  15. Long-nosed chimaera

  16. Explain different adaptations organisms made to survive in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean.
