  3. The Book of Ruth • Moabite woman who was joined to the Israelite people by marriage to Boaz of Bethlehem • Example of Filial piety • Honoring your Father and Mother • Demonstrates the divine reward for such piety even when practiced by a strange

  4. Ruth • Great grandmother of king David • Ruth was a Moabite that married a Jew • Husband and Father-in-law died • Stuck with mother in law (Naomi) and sister-in-law (Orpah) • No kids • Poor • Naomi tells them to go back to their parents • Orpahgoes, Ruth stays

Ruth • Naomi/Ruth go to Bethlehem • Ruth gleans in a field • Field belongs to one of her father in law’s relatives, Boaz (son of Rahab) • Boaz finds out who she is and what she has done –tells her he would protect her • Ruth lays at his feet, Boaz offers to marry her • They have son, Obed • Grandfather of David

David and Goliath1 Samuel 17 • Before David was king • Was sent by Father to front lines (Israel vs. Philistines) to find out about brothers • Persuaded King Saul to fight Goliath • Won the battle by throwing stones • God will use our unique skills that He has given us • God fights with us • Only God’s opinion mattered

  8. Jerusalem, David’s New Capital • King David • Becomes king of Judah (South) • King of Israel (North) was Ishbaal(Saul’s son) • When Ishbaal dies, David becomes king of both • Wants unity • Establishes a new capital city

  9. Jerusalem, David’s New Capital • Defeats Jebusites • Jerusalem (The city of David) • Neutral ground-on the border of Israel and Judah • Becomes the political, military, cultural and religious center for the Chosen People

  12. Bringing the Ark to Jerusalem • David led parade dressed as a priest • Offered sacrifices when he reached final place • Why were his sacrifices not rejected by God? • Offerings out of love/joy • David chosen for a new covenant • Wife, Michal (Saul’s daughter), did not understand

  13. The Covenant with David • Jerusalem –Religious center • Ark placed in a tent on Mt. Zion • David Wants to build a house for God • Prophet Nathan agrees, good idea • God tells Nathan that David will NOT build a temple

The Covenant with David • Nathan tells David what God promised • The Lord will make you a house: Dynasty • I will establish his kingdom: Ruler of a kingdom • He shall build a house for my name: Son will build temple • I will be his father, and he shall be my son: God’s own son • I will chasten him…but I will not take my steadfast love from him: Never disown • You throne shall be established forever: Never End

Davidic Covenant • Seven Primary Features: • Kingdom –More than a nation/great kings • Dynasty –temple, offspring will go on • God’s own son –anointed with oil • Unlimited –Throne everlasting • Jerusalem –Spiritual center of the world • Temple –Place where all people will worship • Wisdom –Wisdom to govern (Solomon)

  16. Davidic Covenant • Three Secondary Features: • Queen Mother –Important part of royal government • “Prime Minister” –Stand between king and other ministers • Thank Offering –Primary liturgy celebrated at Temple, rather than sin offering • Unleavened bread/wine offering thanks for deliverance

  17. Why is David the Greatest OT King? • Always looks for God’s approval • Always asks for His forgiveness • Humility
