If you have talked with a dental professional before about gum disease, then you know how serious it can be. Gingivitis is reversible, but the more serious form of gum disease, periodontitis, requires special measures to control it.
We take your gum health seriously here at Marconi Dental Group. Dr. Alizadeh and the other dentists know that beautiful teeth are nothing without healthy gums to protect them. We also believe that education is the key to effective prevention. Please take a moment to review how correctly utilizing a few simple tools at home can have a major impact on your gum health.
How Are You Brushing Your Teeth? Tooth brushing doesn’t just get rid of food and prevent cavities. It is also meant to remove plaque debris from along the gumline. That’s why it’s important to make sure you’re reaching your gums when you brush. Scrubbing circles over your teeth alone won’t cut it! Spend a solid two minutes at the least in making sure you access your entire gumline. Short, gentle, jiggling motions at the gumline are best for loosening plaque that causes gum inflammation.
Why We Stress the Flossing A toothbrush is important, but it won’t reach in-between your teeth. Floss should be carefully wiggled between teeth and then wrapped around a tooth in a C-shape. The floss should be slipped just below the gums and then gently moved up and down against the tooth. Then you switch to the other side. This removes harmful bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. Other interdental aids from tufted floss or floss threaders to wooden picks can all come in handy. Talk with one of our dental hygienists to find out what is best for you. The most important thing is regularly removing plaque so that it can’t irritate your gums.
Powered Cleaning Device- Not Just a Toy! You may have seen the electric toothbrushes and water flossers at your local drugstore or seen advertisements on television. Are these just a sales gimmick? Far from it! Powered toothbrushes apply more concentrated plaque-removing energy in greater detail than you can manage by hand. Powered toothbrushes often come with time- tracking features to ensure that your teeth get a thorough cleaning, every time. A water flosser is excellent for flushing out areas prone to tartar buildup or food- impaction. For some patients, a water flosser is a lifesaver when manual flossing is physically too difficult for them. These powered tools really enhance the oral hygiene fundamentals!
Rinse Your Way to Better Oral Health There are many over-the-counter rinses with ingredients that combat the development of inflammation-causing bacteria. Some with stronger antibacterial properties are available by prescription. When used in conjunction with proper brushing and flossing techniques, a rinse can help you maintain excellent gum health.
