Mental Health Measures • For Both Mothers and Fathers • From the CIDI (Composite International Diagnostic Interview) Short Form • Major Depressive Episode (scale= 0 – 7), diagnosis (scale>=3) • General Anxiety Disorder (scale= 0 – 13), diagnosis (scale>=9) • Drug & Alcohol Use & Abuse • Substance Abuse Problem

Major Depression (Method 1) • Felt sad or depressed for at least two weeks & • Feelings lasted most or all day & • Feelings felt almost every day or every day & • At least 3 of these symptoms: • Lost interest in things • Feel more tired than usual • Gained or lost 10 or more lbs. without trying • Trouble falling asleep • Trouble concentrating • Feel worthless • Think a lot about death

Major Depression (Method 2) • Lost interest in things for at least two weeks & • Feelings lasted all or most of the day & • Feelings felt almost every day or every day & • At least 3 of these symptoms: • Feel more tired than usual • Gained or lost 10 or more lbs. without trying • Trouble falling asleep • Trouble concentrating • Feel worthless • Think a lot about death

Generalized Anxiety Disorder • Worried, tense or anxious for 6 months or more & • Worry stronger than in other people & • Worry most days& • (Worry about more than one thing OR Have different worries at the same time) & • (Difficult to stop worrying OR Often worry so strong could not put out of mind OR Often difficult to control worry) & • At least 3 of these symptoms: • Resless • Keyed up • Easily tired • Difficulty concentrating • More irritable than usual • Tense, sore or aching muscles • Have trouble falling asleep

Substance Use • Alcohol • Did you drink in past month • # of Days had 5 or more drinks in past month • Abuse = 4 or more times/ month • Marijuana • Did you smoke in past month • How often (every day, nearly every day, several times/month, less than several times/month • Abuse = several times/month or more • Hard Drugs (cocaine, crack, speed, LSD, heroin, other) • Did you use in past month • How often • Abuse = several times/month or more • Any use =yes to any in past month • Substance Abuse Problem (since child’s birth), Yes to any • Drugs/drinking interfered w/managing daily activities • Drugs/drinking interfere w/personal relationships • Seek/got help for drugs/drinking

  7. Mothers’ Mental Health at 1yr. Follow Up % w/Diagnosis Hard Drug Use= 2/1000 Hard Drug Abuse = 1/1000

  8. Fathers’ Mental Health at 1Yr. Follow UP % w/Diagnosis Hard Drug Use = 5/1000 Hard Drug Abuse = 2/1000
