Join us as we share insights on effective effort reporting and certification practices tailored for small institutions with under 50 active PIs. Presented by the Office of Sponsored Programs at Agnes Scott College, we discuss lessons learned since 2009, highlight honest mistakes, and share practical, non-electronic tools to manage these processes. While larger institutions may require automated systems, our experiences may provide valuable takeaways for all. Engage with us, learn from our journey, and discover ways to better communicate with your faculty.

Effort Reporting & Certification without an Electronic “System” For Small PUIs
Presented by the Office of Sponsored Programs from Agnes Scott College (all two of us)

Without Any Electronic "System"? Yes, that means making do with spreadsheets, paper, and raw human brainpower.
Heads Up • Our system won’t work for large institutions (you need something automated for that) • But we think it will work well for small institutions with under 50 active PIs • However • Larger institutions might want to hear what our auditors told us
Session Outline • Who we are • What we have learned about effort reporting and certification since 2009 • Unfortunate mistakes we made (even though we were trying to do everything right) • What we are doing now • Some tools to help you manually track effort • Some tools to help you explain effort reporting and certification to your faculty members
A little background • Agnes Scott College • Just under 900 students • 75 full-time faculty members • Private, liberal arts college in Decatur, Georgia • Under a million in annual research expenditures • First A-133 audit in 2009
We are posting only a few slides before the conference because: • We are going to tell you about mistakes we made, so you can learn from them, • But we don’t want reproducible copies of our dumb mistakes available for circulation • We promise to share everything with those of you who come to the session – after you get to know us.
