  1. Utah Chapter--Meeting OverviewJerome Berg & David Fullwood SAMPE Chapter Relations Meeting 11/7/2012 • Sep: Kickoff meeting (high profile speaker)* • Oct: Regular meeting • Nov: Regular meeting • Jan: Regular meeting • Feb: Regular meeting • Mar: Materials Expo • Apr: Student bridge competition + Regular meeting *Most meetings are the 3rd Wed of the month Social 6:30-7pm, Finish presentations by 8.30-9:00pm

  2. Venues Becoming more difficult to find cost attractive venues for groups of 100 or more

  3. Cost and Pricing • Typical cost per person (venue+ catering): $15-$25 • Pricing structure: • SAMPE Members (incl. Student Members) - FREE • Member Guests - $10 • Non-members - $15 • Students* - $5 • Typical attendance:50 members, 15 guests, 20 students • Cost to Utah Chapter: $1500-$2000 per meeting (including small gift to speaker) * All students (regardless of curricula) were all free until Fall 2012

  4. Organization and Publicity • Dedicated Program Chair on Board (Lenn Riddle) • Listed on UtahSAMPE.org • Flier sent out 3 times starting 3 wks out ~ 200 Members/Students ~ 500 Friends • Automatic RSVP system • Badges printed for RSVPs • “Door Trolls” plug for membership and give badges • Team tracks to an excel checklist & seeks to improve process with lessons learned after each event. • Currently, flyers and logistics handled by board members.

  5. Topics and Speakers • Short student speaker first ~ 10-15min • Most speakers are local (sometimes we pay travel and hotel for more distance speakers - 1/yr?) • Example topics: • Nano technology • Spider silk • Composite Supercar Design & Development • Composites for Missile systems • James Webb Telescope • Design/Development “Deep Water Challenger”

  6. Future Plans/Ideas • Chapter membership spiked after 2010 tech show but we received very little renewal. Currently, new members just about offset our attrition. • We are forming a Membership Team (regionally) to help us understand and serve our customer base better. • Random questionnaires for monthly meetings • Referrals • Establish large company SAMPE champions…..”lunch and learn” • Follow-ups for members about to expire (script) • Recognition of new members (meetings, introduction calls, etc) • Working several initiatives to pull in more students……start early and support these future professional members. • Seems easy to explain benefits to students but somewhat more difficult to explain “why become a professional member”
