  2. GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION • Croatia is located between south-central Europe and middle Europe • neighbours : Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro

  3. POPULATION • around 4 400 000 people live here • the number of people is getting smaller • almost 1 000 000 people live in capital city Zagreb

  4. CLIMATE • continental climate prevails in the north of Croatia • along the Adriatic coast the climate is Mediterranean

  5. POLITICS • since 1990, Croatia is democratic republic • president is Stjepan Mesić, head of state • his official residence is Predsjednički dvori • the Croatian government is headed by the Prime minister Ivo Sanader

  6. CULTURE Croatian culture is the result of a fourteen centuries-long history which has seen the development of many cities and monuments

  7. CULTURE it is a birthplace of a number of historical figuresincluded among the notable peopleare three Nobel prizewinners, and numerous inventors

  8. DEMOGRAPHICS • the population of Croatia has been stagnating over the last decade. During the 1991-1995 war, large sections of the population were displaced and emigration increased • the natural growth rate of the population is currently negative

  9. HISTORY the Croatians settled on the east coast of the Adriatic Sea and the Pannonian lands in early 7th century, forming two principalities, Dalmatia and Pannonia

  10. HISTORY Croatia was recognized on January 15, 1992 by the European Union and the United Nations. The first country that recognized Croatia , was Iceland on December 19, 1991

  11. ECONOMY • Croatian economy has a stable market economy • the industrial sector is dominated by shipbuilding, food processing and the chemical industry

  12. ECONOMY • of particular concern is the backlogged judiciary systemcombined with inefficient public administration, especially issues of land ownership and corruption • the country has been preparing for membership in the European Union, its most important trading partner

  13. SPORT • most popular sports in Croatia : football, handball, basketball, water polo and tennis • with a small number of population,Croatia is very good in sport

  14. FOOTBALL the Croatian national football teamfinished third in the 1998FIFA World Cupand Davor Šukerwon the Golden Bootas the top goal scorer

  15. FOOTBALL two main teams in Croatia are FC Dinamo Zagreb with between 33% and 36% of the population supporting them and FC Hajduk Split with about 25%of supporters

  16. HANDBALL members of Croatian national handball team were world champions in 2003 and two time Olympic winners - in 1996 and 2004

  17. HANDBALL Ivano Balić is considered to be the best handball player in the world. HC Zagreb was a two time European champion and HC Bjelovar won the same championshiponce.
