  4. Today’s jobs REQUIRE at least a college degree • School capacity is challenged • KY student to counselor ratio 459:1 • Fewer low income students complete college WHY GEAR UP?

  5. Students finish high school but are not ready for college level work. • Students not meeting EXPLORE benchmark by end of 8th grade are not likely to meet ACT benchmarks by high school graduation without significant intervention. WHY GEAR UP?

  6. GEAR UP Kentucky 3.0 • $4.487 million in federal funding each year • Six Years (2011 - 2017+) • Total Federal - $26.9M • Dollar-for-dollar match • Total Match - $53.8M • Serving at least 10,000 students The Big Picture

Statewide School Tour Process • Only schools with 51% or more students F/RPL eligible • No overlap with schools included in other GEAR UP applications • Other factors considered: • School performance on EXPLORE • Geographic need/resources in school • Proximity to postsecondary institution WHY THESE SCHOOLS?
