Blog’s History • Before blogs there were ‘Threads’ • Blogs as we know them today evolved • Bruce Ableson opened Open Diary in October 1998. • Brad Fitzpatrick started Live Journal in March 1999. • Andrew Smales created Pitas.com in July 1999Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan (Pyra Labs) launched blogger.com in August 1999 (purchased by Google in February 2003)

  4. How are Blogs Useful • It’s easy to spread your idea- its searchable • It’s free • Just to share their life with others • Quick to produce/post • Portable- can log in to your blog to post a new post from anywhere in the world

Blog’s Benefits Concerns • Requires No Web Designing Knowledge • Share Knowledge • Increases Creativity • Way to express yourself • Unique Content • Online Marketing • Financial Gain (possibly) • Easy to Start and Hard to Maintain • Requires a Lot of Time • Loss of Privacy and Security • Requires Knowledge of Computers

  6. Wiki's History • Wikis came about from a need for an easier way to share information. It was first used by engineers and scientists to create an easy access community of accurate information and developed from there.

  7. How are Wikis Useful • Organizing data • Sharing ideas • Free to use • Can access it from anywhere

Wiki’s Benefits Concerns • Unlike a blog or email multiple people can change or edit the text in the message. • Easy to link information • Organized • Can be accessed by multiple people • Anyone can edit it • Privacy (anyone can see it) • Information can come from anywhere • Information can become inaccurate if not checked on a regular bases

  9. Podcast’s History • Originated from apple • Allow for audio and or video on demand • Receiving and Subscribing

  10. How are Podcasts Useful • Education • Information • News and updates • Entertainment • Free to use

  11. Podcast’s Benefits Concerns • Easy to obtain • Easy to broadcast • Can be viewed on the go • Takes time to download • Consume computer storage • Mobile device is often needed

  12. Social Networking • It’s a place to share information with family and friends. • Social networking site originated from people who wanted to share and meet new people. • This is how social networking goes with social media

  13. How are Social Media/Social Networking Useful • It’s a place to share ideas • Meet new people around the world • Good to advertise new products • Get feedback from products • Share pictures and video from family and friends • Free websites

Social Media/Social Networking Benefits Concerns • Free websites like Facebook & MySpace • Use it for personal and business usage • Able to contact your friends and family around the world. • Access from anywhere • Can be used by stalkers • Can be used by child predators • Sites open up privacy and security fears • Identity thief
