  1. 5 Factors to Keep in Mind for Selecting Manufacturing Execution System (MES) Software A number of manufacturing organizations aiming at enhancing their overall operations and assessing their potential in mapping operational improvement initiatives has started adopting and installing MES software within the system. As per the size of an organization's and its production scale, this solution has come across as a great way to find the best route to streamline the overall production operations. Targeting implementation of continuous improvement programs, processes and cultures, manufacturing execution system software provides a diversity of solutions. Discussed below are five important considerations that need to be given during MES evaluation process:  Know and map current processes: The scope of MES execution will vary with each company’s scale of operations. The implementation is a time consuming process since it involves mapping and identifying the workflow enforcement in which the automation is crucial part. It needs to be considered at the time of short listing candidate solutions.

  2. Considering the parties involved: In order to deploy a manufacturing execution system software, executive ownership is undeniably crucial. Similarly, collaboration between cross functional teams is another vital factor. So sighting and soliciting input from all parties to ensure that the communication remains smooth and can be applied expansively across all departments is very important.  Coaching parties working closely with MES: It is important to set the expectations right especially for those who are working closely or bear a direct impact from the functioning of an MES. Its implementation will change the course of day-to-day business and related manufacturing activities. So, preparing the teams about the challenges and disruptions is the best way to introduce manufacturing execution system software within the system.  Define success metrics: Identifying the problems and being ready with the solutions is the next step to provide benefits to the company. So, having some metrics in place will help in streamlining the entire MES implementation process with respect to time, effectiveness, etc. Also, deep diving into geography, type of business, product line and assessing site level information so that respective teams can understand the impact of such implementation.  Know the current IT capabilities: Before implementing MES, it is important to inquire and understand the existing IT capability which can better define the scope of MES project. With the existing cloud-based, Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions, it is however possible to manage MES with quite lesser internal resources along with ensuring its consistent maintenance and support. However, with all the initial implementations, it is important to know and monitor security, performance, and integration that will demand high end professional IT expertise. All in all, all the above mentioned tips will help in setting the foundational framework on which MES can be build, executed and managed over a longer time period.
