  1. Timber Supply Review and Species Management By: Paul Barolet, R.P.F., Stewardship Officer

  2. GREAT CSC THEME !*Speciesism = prejudice or discriminationbased on species, and does it matter to the AAC? • Let’s examine some situations in less than 1 minute per slide. • Is speciesism already a reality in current TSR‘s?

  3. This 2006 report cited a number of concerns and made recommendations related to monitoring practices for timber supply

  4. Under-story Prejudice in the KINGCOME TSA Pre-harvest Forest Cover Cw Hw 951 Forest Cover Inventory is now Hw 7 Cw 2 BA 1

  5. Over-Story Tree Species Discrimination in a TFL Pre-harvest Stand Label Fdc Hw 951 Even aged Retention System in RESULTS

  6. Over-story Tree Species Discrimination RESULTS Spatial Data Submitted Even Aged Forest Cover Inventory is now Hw 60 Cw 20 Fdc 20 Google Image Field Photo

  7. Kingcome TSA Forest Cover Discrimination? Pre-Harvest Stand Label CwYc 931 Pre-Harvest Stand Label Cw Hw 941

  8. Author Gordon Baskerville, PhD “Why Forecasts Fail”

  9. Forest Influence and Even Aged Stands?

  10. Inventory Discrimination in the Mid-Coast TSA Even Aged Forest Cover Inventory is now Cw 70 Hw 20 Yc 10

  11. Forest Cover Data Integrity and Timber Supply • Regarding forest cover attributes applied in TSR forecasts, please remember that; DATA IN = AAC FORECAST OUT or GARBAGE IN = GARBAGE OUT • Think about Baskerville’s comments and that TSR forecasts should mimic the on ground reality (current practice) in the forest both in terms of yield curves and harvest flows. • In summary TSR’s are to reflect current practices in their modelling assumptions (see Forest Act section 8).

  12. Forest Cover Reporting • Coast Regional Implementation Team; messaging & consensus on stocking standards and forest cover reporting • FPPR section 86 • RESULTS Information Submission Specifications Manual • Submitting Forest Cover to RESULTSfor OPENINGS with TREED Retention • Silviculture Survey Procedures Manual - Regen Delay, Stocking and Free Growing Surveys - plus Alternative Survey Methodologies • Forest Management Leadership Team Forest Cover direction letter

  13. This includes standing waste!

  14. Craig Wickland in even aged clear cut net area to reforest

  15. Previously Harvested StandsMid-Coast TSR 3 Experience • a net area of 7120 hectares. Most of these stands were apparently excluded because of low net value and inventory attributes....About 87 percent of the stands were hemlock or balsam leading,.... • I estimate that about 50 percent of previously harvested stands that were excluded as inoperable will contribute to future timber supply in the TSA. • This resulted in a loss of 3560 ha or 2.2% of THLB.

  16. Inventory and THLB does it matter?

  17. Forest Cover Attributes and THLB Loss? Dispersed retention in the field Even aged in RESULTS

  18. Total Chance Planning?

  19. Or Isolation of Future Timber?

  20. Silviculture does it matter to the AAC? • Timber supply requires unbiased and accurate forest cover reporting regardless of the source. • Timber supply areas increasingly reveal both economic and logistical challenges associated with less diverse stands and high logging costs which is considered in timber supply. • When weighing your economic decision to rely on natural ingress outcomes consider how this affects the THLB based on previous TSR’s and managed stand yield curves and site index adjustment. • THLB reductions could be offset with inventory attributes of residual basal area to contribute to future timber supply.

  21. Silviculture does it matter to the AAC? • Timber supply analysts should revisit even aged yield curves assumptions (base case) relative to growing conditions under current practice. • Has the scale of resolution for analysis units become too generalized? • Professionals are responsible for; • surveying and accurately reporting forest cover of stand conditions when >5m2/ha is retained • meeting all legal policies and professional expectations • Yes, silviculture matters to the AAC!
