  1. PHOTOSHOP BASICS SO YOU CAN USE IT AS A NOUN AND A VERB

  2. BEFORE YOU BEGIN • What are you using the application for? • Print • Video • Dimensions are key!

  3. STARTING NEW • Open the application and select File ->New from the application menu • You will be asked to set some parameters • Start by creating a FILE NAME

  4. You need to make sure the dimensions of the canvas match that of your video STARTING NEW

  5. DIMENSIONS • T3i’s video is shot at a resolution of either: • 1920 x 1080 @ 24 or 30fps • 1280 x 720 @ 60fps

  6. Default layout Tool Options Color Pallet History Tool Pallet Layers

  7. GET IN THE HABIT • The first thing you should do is make your background a layer • Double click the layer to unlock it. • Now you can make alterations to it.

  8. Once your background is made into a layer use cmd-a to select all, then delete to delete the white part of the canvas. A checkered background is a transparant background!

  9. OPENING • Photoshop we open instead of import. • Move the file bowl_of_fruit.jpeg down from the server. • Please go to File —> open —> bowl_of_fruit.jpeg

  10. You should all have this open in Photoshop. Notice how it is opened in a new tab. Use cmd-a to select all, then use cmd-x to cut. In your project tab cmd-v to paste.

  11. Notice the dimensions of the fruit image were smaller than the canvas we made. Time to dig into some tools!

  12. TOOLS Marquee Tool (m) Marquee tool is a user input tool in which you control what is selected. Magic Wand is a smart tool where the application controls what is selected based on specific parameters. Magic Wand Tool (w)

  13. Select the white portion of the image. The Magic Wand selects every similar pixel in that area based on the parameter that they are all the same color. to deselect the area selected, use cmd-d.

  14. Use your Marquee tool to click and drag a rectangle over the bottom portion of the image, just below the bowl.

  15. TOOLS Magnetic lasso (L) Magnetic lasso will trace an outline around an object based on similar parameters. i.e. color

  16. Use the magnetic lasso to trace the outline of the bowl. Click periodically to add another point on the lasso. You need to make a complete loop!

  17. TOOLS Hoping this one is self explanatory…however! Eraser Tool (E)

  18. A tool with options will have those options listed at the top of their canvas. Brush Presets Use the eraser tool to clean up the rest of the image

  19. CLEAN IT UP • Use the eraser tool to clean up your bowl of fruit. • Find another image to open in photoshop and cut and copy it into your canvas with the fruit.

  20. Layers work in a 2D space. You can’t see the bottom layer because the top layer obstructs it. You can rearrange the order of the layers simply by dragging them where you want. Make sure your fruit is on top.

  21. CMD-T • CMD-T is used to transform an image. • Great for quick resizes • Or to make sure your background image fills the canvas • ALWAYS HOLD SHIFT!
