  2. The mission • Canada is in Afghanistan to help Afghans rebuild their country as a stable, democraticand self-sufficient society. We are there with over 60 other nations and international organizations, at the request of the democratically-elected Afghan government and as part of a UN mandated, NATO-led mission.

  3. Six objectives to the mission • Security • Basic services • Humanitarian • Borders • Institutions • Reconciliation

  4. Security • Build the capacity of Afghan National Security Force in Kandahar (Law & Order) • Train and equip the Afghan National Army and the Afghan National Police • Buildcapacity in administration and logistical support of ANA and ANP • Contribute to reformed justice and correctionalsystems

  5. Basic services • Deliver basic services to the region of Kandahar • Providefunctionalliteracy training and vocationalskills • Create jobs • Rehabilitate infrastructure

  6. Humanitarian • Clearing of landmines • Distributefood • Necessity packages to vulnerable people • Providehealth care to women and children (vaccinations: tetanus, measles and polio, therapeuticfeeding for children)

  7. Borders • Contribute to dialogue between Afghanistan and Pakistani border officials • Facilitate discussions of border officials • Training border and securityofficers • Providecritical infrastructure and equipment

  8. National Institutions • Providefinancial support to electionprocess • Workwithotherdonors to mobilise resources for elections commissions • Workwithkey international institutions to build administrative capacity

  9. Reconciliation • Afghan ledreconciliation to weakeninsurgency • Development of mechanismsthatwill encourage dialogue • Improvement of capacity to communicatewithcitizens • Strengthening of civil-society capacity to promotereconciliation
