Converting mixed numbers to improper fractions is MAD • 1) Multiply the denominator by the whole number • 2) Add that product to the numerator • 3) Denominator stays the same
Adding & Subtracting Mixed Numbers • Same Denominator • 1) Add the numerators (top #) • 2) Keep the denominator (bottom #)the same • Example:
Different Denominators • 1) Find a common denominator • The easiest way to do this is to find the product of the two denominators! • Example: 2 + 2 • 3 6 6 x 3 = 18 • 2) Convert each fraction • The denominator 3 has to be multiplied by 6 to get 18, so we multiply both top and bottom by 6 to get an equivalent faction. • 2 X 6 = 12 2 x 3 = 6 • 3 X 6 = 18 6 x 3 = 18 The denominator 6 has to be multiplied by 3 to get 18, so we multiply both top and bottom by 3 to get an equivalent fraction.
+ = • 3) Add the numerators & keep the denominators the same • 12 6 18 • 18 18 18
Once you have found a common denominator and converted each fraction…… • 1) Add or subtract the numerators. • 2) Keep the denominator the same. • 3) Reduce and/or covert back to a mixed number. • 12 + 6 18 • 18 18 18 = = 1
