  2. Essential Question: • What needs to be in a body paragraph to support my thesis statement?

  3. A body paragraph contains these types of sentences: Topic Sentence: What the paragraph is about. Concrete Detail: • Textual evidence or example: a fact, quote, or info. that supports your topic sentence. Commentary or explanation: • Inference or analysis, explains why the concrete detail is important, what it means or how it supports your topic sentence. You can use more than one commentary sentence for each concrete detail. Conclusion Sentence: • Should sum up the main idea of the paragraph. It should not repeat your topic sentence, but impact the evidence and analysis between the topic sentence and the end of the paragraph.

Example paragraph: Topic Sentence: The ninth grade language arts teachers have their own types and styles of teaching. • Concrete Detail: Mr. Bateman always holds a rock while he talks to the class. • Commentary: His students think he is weird. • Concrete Detail:Mrs. Douthit speaks softly and uses active listening. • Commentary: She creates an inclusive learning environment for her students. • Concrete Detail: Mr. Keller uses self-deprecating humor and bad puns while teaching. • Commentary: His jokes make students enjoy class and want to participate. Conclusion Sentence: Students learn in many ways so different styles help all kids learn.
