  1. Bait Preparation Improvement System Final Presentation ENGR 232: Design and Communications II Department of Engineering St. Francis Xavier University April 2, 2012 Jeffrey Grover , Alex MacDonald, Alex Scales, Michael Myers, Jessica MacInnis

  2. Abstract • Automate the bait bagging process • Over 10,000 lobster fishing licenses in Atlantic Canada • Currently have to manually cut fish and place them in bait bags • The bait preparation improvement system could save the average fisherman 58 hours of labour per fishing season

  3. Lobster Fishery in Atlantic Canada • Regulated by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada • Lobster fishery is managed by areas • Over 10,000 Lobster fishing licenses in Atlantic Canada

  4. Design Concept • Problem – time consuming to manually prepare bait bags in the lobster fishing industry • Solution – automate the process to efficiently prepare bait bags, saving on time and labour costs • The Bait Preparation Improvement System(BPIS) was Maritime Marine’s solution to this problem.

  5. Bait Preparation Improvement System

  6. Components of BPIS • Blades • Base • Mechanical System • Funnel

  7. Blade Design Hollow Grind Flat Grind Sabre Grind Chisel Grind Double Bevel Convex Grind http://zknives.com/knives/articles/knifeedgetypes.shtml

  8. Blade Design • Blades sit in the grooves on the plate • Plates are secured with screws, keeping the plates in place

  9. The Base • Original flat design • Securely mount the mechanism • Support the plates and blades

  10. Prototype and Construction • Oak plywood and pine board construction • Plexiglass cover • Modifications • Added protective cover • Added sides and back • Added Teflon track

  11. Mechanical System Mechanism Lever RAM

  12. Funnel • Sheet metal on prototype • Custom made • This is what was available to us • Screws added to bottom to attach the bait bag

  13. Force Calculations • Lever Arm- Moment (M)=Force(F) x radius(r) M =77.92N x 0.40132m = 31.27 Nm • Shaft 1- F=M/r F=31.27 Nm/0.0445m = 702.69N • Shaft 2– M=F x r M=702.69N x 0.0127 m = 8.92 Nm • Shaft 2- F=M/r F= 8.92 Nm/0.0254m =351.34N • Force exerted by the rack = 351.34 N

  14. BPIS Efficiency Testing

  15. Efficiency Results Manual average time – 33.8 seconds BPIS average time – 19.8 seconds

  16. Efficiency Results • Compared to the manual bait preparation, the BPIS prepares bait bags on average 41% faster. • On average, 14 seconds faster per bait bag. • 58 minutes saved per day per fisherman based on an average of 250 bait bags needed. • Translates into $875 in cost savings to the average fisherman over the course of the fishing season (based on $15/hr wage).

  17. Cost Table

  18. Ideal Design The Base : • Correct Sizes • Weather and Wear Resistant Material • Galvanized Steel - Gauge 2 (1/4’’) • Welded Construction • One square meter of Material

  19. Ideal Design • Ideal material for the funnel will be ABS Plastic • 16 ft² of ¼” material • Low coefficient of friction, 0.2 • Modified gear ratio to for a push ram force of 550 newtons. • Gear A: 3 inch diameter • Gear B: 1 inch diameter • Gear C: 1.5 inch diameter • 4/10 of a full rotation • Blades and push ram will not be modified • Ideal design will be marketed at $1200 per unit.

  20. Acknowledgements • Steve MacDonald • Nicholas Grover • Leo Grover • Edward MacDonald • Peter Nowlan • Peter Dyselka • Various fishermen from Dingwall and Baxter’s Cove Harbour Authority

  21. Questions ?? Fun Facts About Lobsters • The largest American lobster was caught off the cost of Nova Scotia, and weighed 44 pounds, 6 ounces and was 3 feet, 6 inches long. • It takes an American lobster 6-7 years to get to an edible size, but that is just the beginning. Lobsters are long-lived animals, and are thought to be capable of living over 100 years. • 99.9% of lobsters spawned will die before they reach mature age to be caught and sold.
