  3. Getting Clarification If you do not understand what someone has said (or you want to check your understanding), you must get clarification. - Don’t stay quiet!

  4. Getting Clarification Ask the speaker to repeat what he/she said: - Sorry, I didn’t quite get that. - Could you please repeat that? - Excuse me, could you say that again?

  5. Getting Clarification Confirm: - Are you saying…? - So, you mean…? - What you’re saying is…? - Do you mean…?

  6. Getting Clarification Confirm: - Are you saying…? - So, you mean…? - What you’re saying is…? - Do you mean…? Example: “If you ask me, all the prisoners should just be put to death; that’s the easiest solution.”

  7. Getting Clarification Confirm: - Are you saying…? - So, you mean…? - What you’re saying is…? - Do you mean…? Example: “Giving free cars to college students is a ridiculous idea, it will just increase the number of traffic accidents.”

  8. Getting Clarification Confirm: - Are you saying…? - So, you mean…? - What you’re saying is…? - Do you mean…? Example: “I think we should wait and see what other companies do before we start making big decisions.”

  9. Getting Clarification 1. Suggest a way to save time in the morning. 2. Say why smart phones are dangerous. 3. Give a reason why movies are better than TV programs. 4. Explain one test studying strategy you use.

  10. Multiple perspectives and debate Discussions are much more interesting (and potentially more productive) if: - Multiple perspectives are expressed. - Some disagreement and debate takes place.

  12. 1. The best place to go shopping. 2. Give a negative opinion about night clubs. 3. Give a positive opinion of living with your parents. 4. Say why Korea is a better country than the US.

  13. Multiple perspectives and debate 2. Debate (expressing and discussing ideas) - One of the most important aspects here is to QUALIFY your statements. Don’t just disagree, or say “That’s wrong.” “Your opinion is stupid.”

  15. Alcohol should be illegal. Females are better students than males. Computer/video games are the leading cause of violence in today's society. Lawyers deserve more money than doctors.

  16. - Qualify your opinions/statements  Provide evidence whenever you can • Ask for clarification • Don’t be afraid to disagree

  17. Practice Panel Discussion Agenda 1. Do you think smartphone addiction is a real disease or condition? What makes you feel this way? 2. Have you seen or personally experienced symptoms of withdrawal (after not using a smartphone for some period of time)? What did it feel like (or, what did you think it felt like)? 3. If you were asked to give up your smartphone for one week, do you think you could do it? Discuss. 4. What is something you do (or, can do) with your smartphone that you feel has brought a significant positive change in your life? (or, in the lives of people generally)?
