  1. Specifying Engineered Wood Floors Seminar Agenda • Kährs – The Company • Wood flooring technology • Product ranges • Manufacturing • Installation and maintenance • Environment • Case Studies/references

  2. Europe’s largest producer of wood floors

  3. Kährs worldwide Subsidiaries Importers/Distributors

  4. Multi-layered wood floors • Wood is a hygroscopic material striving for moisture balance. It’s also anisotropic: different swelling, shrinking and performance in three directions. • A multi-layer construction reduces movement by up to 75% and is more stable in climate change than a solid construction.

  5. Comparing solid and multi-layered constructions

  6. Wood Species Ash Beech Cherry Hard Maple Jarrah Oak Walnut

  7. Sub floor • The sub-floor must be flat, solid and dry • The subfloor must not exceed ± 3 mm over a distance of 2 meters. • The relative humidity (RH) must be below 75% • The sub floor must be stable enough to lay on

  8. Expansion • Expansion must be allowed for: • A minimum working gap of 10mm is required around all perimeters including fixed points (radiator pipes etc). • This is based on a calculation of 1.5mm expansion per meter width of floor e.g. a 10 meter wide floor would need expansion of 15mm.

  9. Underfloor heating • An approved vapour barrier such as Tuplex should always be used. •Beech and hard maple are more sensitive species. •Heat should be evenly distributed over the entire surface, with max surface temperature of 27°c.

  10. Surface finishes Satin lacquer Matt lacquer Nature oil

  11. Grading/treatment A (cleanest) D (rustic) City Town Country Classic AB BC ABCD Treatment Tone and overall effect is uniform Subtle variations in tone and pattern, but without knots Dramatic graining and knotted wood Stained, brushed, bevelled, hand scraped

  12. 2-strip 1-strip 2-strip 3-strip Bevelled Pattern Stained Bevelede

  13. Installation and maintenance

  14. Accessories • Available in different sizes, colours and wood species to suit all floors. • There is always a solution.

  15. Renewable Unlike plastics and other material, woodenfloors are 100% biodegradable and can be returned to nature.

  16. Energy efficiency In our factory waste material from logs is converted to bio-fuel. This is used to heat our own facilities and provide energy for 20,000 homes. Waste ash is then returned to the forest as a rich fertilizer.

  17. Recyclable Glueless joints enable the floor to be taken up easily – and relocated if necessary. At the end of the floors useful life it can be used to produce energy or returned to nature.

  18. Glueless Glueless joints are better for the environment.

  19. Replantation Five trees are replanted for every tree harvested.

  20. Environmentalcommitments • FSC/PEFC • ISO 14001 • EMAS • NWFA • ISO 9001

  21. Controlled suppliers A good manufacturer will only use suppliers who hold an FSC or PEFC certificate - or who in some other way demonstrate that they operate environmentally aware timber procurement.

  22. The smartest solution turned out to be green • Renewable • Resource efficient • Solvent-free finish • Recyclable • Long-life • Glueless • Water-based stains • Low emissions
