Essential Question. Savannah Hill. How do we define the personality traits of a hero?. Someone who has the courage or ability to do something unique and different for the greater good. Someone who is brave and is someone that other people can look up to whether its good or bad.

  2. How do we define the personality traits of a hero? • Someone who has the courage or ability to do something unique and different for the greater good. • Someone who is brave and is someone that other people can look up to whether its good or bad

  3. How does a hero reflect his/her particular culture and society? • Marshall Mathers grew up (for most of his life) in Detroit • Detroit is a very ghetto and dangerous neighborhood. • Detroit is actually on the verge of bankruptcy and made it on the list of most dangerous cities • Marshall Mathers is the most dangerous with his lyrics. Mathers made it big because he learned from his city that you have to be dangerous one way or another to get the respect that you deserve.

How does a hero represent his/her time period and geographical area? • When Tupac died, Eminem was his substitute. • Eminem thought Tupac was the greatest songwriter that ever lived. • Two Tupac songs that made a deep impression on Eminem include "Brenda's Got a Baby" and "Dear Mama," which the Michigan rapper reportedly "played in his car for practically a year after it came out.”

  5. How do various cultures reward or recognize their heroes? • Many outside cultures reward their heroes by giving them some sort of power or control over them. • They recognize their hero by the courageous act or the helpfulness they bring to their society

Influences and rapping technique • The musicians who had a major influence on Marshall Mathers are Ice T, the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and Run DMC, Rakim, Melle Mel, Esham, Masta Ace, Kool G Rap, Newcleus, Mantronix, Big Daddy Kane as well as Boogie Down Productions • One of his rapping techniques is to switch from one flow to another. • He also find something wrong with you and picks at it and makes you scared.

  9. How did his childhood mold him into the person he is today? • Father abandoned him when he was 18 months old • His uncle, Ronnie, introduced him into hip hop when he was 11 years old • Preformed amateur raps when he was 14

  10. How did he try to make something of himself? • Eminem went to a lot of underground performances. Even though he would choke or be booed frequently off stage • Made his first music video performance with one of his earlier mentors, Champtown • Started to write, rap and record his own songs eventually making his Infinite album

How do the setting, conflicts, and antagonists influence the development of literary heroes? • His mother used to verbally abuse him as a child while also consuming a lot of prescription drugs and alcohol. • His father left him when he was only a baby • He was beaten up by bullies at every school her transferred to and his mother sued the school for lack of protection. • Bullies made him suffer from nightmares and antisocial behaviors. • He was beaten up in restrooms at school, people threw ice balls at him, and would beat him up until his eyes were swollen and lips busted open • Some of his attacks resulted in concussions, temporary loss of vision in one eye, broken noses, and etc.

Extra… • Eminem was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, 17 October 1973, Kansas City, Missouri, USA • After repeating the ninth grade twice due to truancy and near-failing grades, he dropped out of high school at age 17. • 1991, Uncle Ronnie committed suicide and he got a tattoo on his upper left arm • Mathers was initially signed to FBT Productions in 1992, run by two brothers Jeff and Mark Bass • He was married to the same woman twice • His mother tried sueing him for the lyrics in Slim Shady LP. Wanted 10 million but only received $1,600
