  1. Transport Systems Gas Exchange in other organisms Fish Gill Prac

  2. Outline • Revision Quiz – Heart & Lungs • Comparison of open and closed system • Gas Exchange in Fish • Fish Gill Prac

  3. Revision Quiz • Do revision quiz – Heart & Lungs in Notes Link

  4. COMPARSION OF OPEN AND CLOSED SYSTEM • Fill out the worksheet in the Notes Link

  5. GAS EXCHANGE IN FISH • UNLIKE TERRESTRIAL ORGANSIMS THOSE THAT LIVE IN WATER DO NOT HAVE A GREAT ACCESS TO OXYGEN • THE LEVEL OF OXYGEN IN WATER IS VERY LOW, DEPENDING ON THE TEMPERATURE, DEPTH AND WHETHER IT IS FRESH OR SALT WATER AFFECTS THE AMOUNT OF OXYGEN AVAILABLE • FISH HAVE DEVELOPED GILLS TO OVERCOME THIS PROBLEM

  6. SIMPLEST GILLS ARE FOUND ON STARFISH • MOST COMPLEX GILLS ON FISH • GILLS VENTILATE WATER TWO WAYS • MOVING THE GILLS THROUGH THE WATER • OR MOVING WATER PAST THE GILLS • THE FIRST ONE IS ONLY PRACTICAL FOR SMALLER ORGANISMS • SO MOST FISH MOVE THE WATER THROUGH THEIR GILLS

  7. FISH BREATHING • http://www.biotopics.co.uk/pot/animals/fishcy.html

  8. GILLS • FISH GILLS COMPOSED OF SEVERAL GILL ARCHES LOCATED ON EITHER OF THE PHARYNX • WATER DRAWN INTO PHARYNX VIA MOUTH THEN PUSHED BETWEEN GILL ARCHES BY COMPRESSING THE PHARYNX – MOUTH IS CLOSED • FOCES WATER BETWEEN INDIVDUAL GILL LAMELLE (LEAF LIKE STRUCTURES WHERE GAS EXCHANGE TAKES PLACE) • THEN PASSES OUT THROUGH OPERCULUM – COVERS AND PROTECTS FRAGILE GILLS

  9. GILLS

  10. COUNTERCURRENT FLOW • FISH GILLS ALSO HAVE AN ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT FEATURE • COUNTERCURRENT FLOW – INCREASE AMOUNT OF OXYGEN EXTRACTED FROM WATER • BECAUSE THE BLOOD FLOW IN THE LAMELLAE IS THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO OXYGEN OF WATER • INCREASE EXTRACTION OF OXYGEN BY UP TO 80-90%

  11. COUNTERCURRENT FLOW

  12. Demonstration • COUNTERCURRENT FLOW • This is because the blood in the capillaries always encounter water that has greater concentration of oxygen. This creates a concentration gradient for a longer time so that oxygen can diffuse easily into the blood vessel from water.

  13. Fish Gill Prac • Safety Instructions: • Be careful of sharp implements • Wear gloves, safety glasses and lab coats to protect against foreign bodies • Prac instructions in Notes link • If can not do the prac look up answers in text book or internet • Fill out and hand in at end of lesson.
