  1. Extended Responses What is the format for an Extended Response (essay)?

General Tips • Read the directions and the prompt---typically there are multiple tasks/questions to attend to; • Read the question carefully, underlining key words/phrases; • Restate the question(s); • Author’s purposes or opinions are the focus—not yours!; • Write neatly; • Partial credit is given just for attempting the answer; • If using a direct quote from the text, put it in quotation marks; • Do not include your opinion or outside information—this test is assessing how well you read not what you know!; • RELAX!!! You’re going to do great!

  3. Extended Response • Extended Response prompts include both a questionandinstructionson how to answer the question.; • However, both are usually more complex than a Short Response question.

Extended Response • The recommended time allotment is 10-15 minutes; • Extended Response are scored as 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4; • Students must answer in the space provided—however, if you need more room you can use blank space in other parts of the test booklet!; • An Extended Response consists of 4 paragraphs—Intro, 2 Body, and a Conclusion; • Write 3 TEXT BASED examples /details=5-7 sentences in the body paragraphs; • Write 3 sentences in your Intro & Concluding paragraphs.

Extended Response Score of 5 • The response indicates that the student has a thorough understanding of the reading concept embodied in the task.; • The student has provided a response that is accurate, complete, and fulfills all the requirements of the task.; • Necessary support (TEXT BASED DETAILS) examples are included, and the information is clearly text-based.

  7. 30 The Mona Lisa has been kept in several different places since da Vinci painted it. Write an essay in which you contrast these places. Describe the conditions under which the painting was kept. Use details from the article to support your answer. In your answer, be sure to • describe the different places where the Mona Lisa was kept • tell how these places were different from one another • describe the conditions under which the painting was kept • use details from the article to support your answer Check your writing for correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous Mona Lisa painting is still intact after 500 years of wear and tear. Throughout the 500 years, it was moved from place to place to place. Two of those places happen to be known- the grand Louvre museum in Paris and the trunk of a thief. The Mona Lisa was a very durable painting as it had been painted on wood, not on the traditional paper or canvas. Luckily, the durability let it last through some comfortable situations and some harsh ones. Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is a very great painting. The famous Mona Lisa had been through many, many very harsh conditions. One of these was in a evil thief’s trunk. The story goes that the thief was a workman at the Louvre Art Museum where it was being held at the time. On August 21, 1911, this workman split open the case of the Mona Lisa and took it with him (stole it).   8. Text Based Detail Text Based Detail it back to Italy and kept it in his rancid trunk for 2 years! The conditions were hot, sweaty and very dirty. There was no care for the painting and it could have simply rotted. It was very horrible. Now, the Mona Lisa is kept in a very clean, and moisture full setting. It is back at its grand station- the Louvre Art Museum in Paris, France. Here it is placed in its own special room complete with bulletproof glass casing and a perfect temperature with air conditioning. It is the opposite of the thief’s trunk- clean and safe versus dirty and easily stolen. The Mona Lisa is receiving very grand treatment right now. The Mona Lisa has been through many struggles including thieves and horrendous conditions. It survived both of those situations and is now safely displayed in the Louvre. The pinewood piece is in perfect condition and does not seem like it was in a trunk. What a change! Differences: excellent contrast Conclusion is an inference Cluster Score = 5 -Taken as a whole, the responses demonstrate a thorough understanding of the article, and they support that understanding with ample text-based details.

Let’s give it a try! • Through out this week, you will be presented in class and for homework with Extended Response prompts; • You will be OUTLINING how you would respond to each prompt; • First, it will be modeled in class, then you will try it independently; • The idea is, you already KNOW how to write paragraphs, therefore it is just knowing how to pull it all together into an essay or Extended Response!
