Tips for Choosing your Wedding Cake

Even just thirty years ago, the most common wedding cake seen at weddings all over

Australia was the traditional fruit cake covered in thick white marzipan icing. Often

multi-tiered, it was usually decorated with ribbons and sugared flowers; there were no

surprises when it came to a bridal cake.

These days things have changed somewhat! While fruitcake is still reasonably

popular, and white marzipan-style icing is still quite common, the options for your

wedding cake are much more varies – and in many ways, anything goes.

from unique designs and flavours you really

From unique designs and flavours, you really can take your time to choose the cake that is

perfect for you.

Traditionally, bridal couples will still keep the first, smallest layer of their wedding cake. This

will be frozen for a year (which is why brandy-laden fruit cake is a great option for this layer)

and shared on the occasion of the first wedding anniversary or the Christening of the first child.

Most wedding cakes are cut as a formal part of the wedding reception, and then either served

with tea and coffee at the end of the night or sent home with guests.

So how do you choose your wedding cake?

You need to consider the following:

What flavour/s do you like?

Here you are not limited – you can even choose different flavours for the different tiers.

Choose with your partner in mind too! Options range from fruitcake to mud cake, or white

chocolate, lemon, vanilla, red velvet … the list goes on. Some couples opt for something

completely different, like a croquembouche, a tower of cupcakes, or even cake pops. Choose

what suits you.

Choose a cake decoration to complement the style and theme of

your wedding.

this is where your imagination and creativity

This is where your imagination and creativity have no limits. Your wedding cake can be as

individual as you are, and there are no rules. Most definitely out of style are cookie-cutter

white cakes with plastic bridal wedding toppers.

Some brides choose to coordinate with their bridal colour scheme; others coordinate the

jewellery used in their bridal ensemble with their cake. Many coordinate their bouquet flowers

with flowers on the cake.

A more traditional wedding will suit a classic simple cake in white hues and with little

embellishment. A contemporary wedding can have a cake that’s more colourful. If you are a

quirky couple, have a quirky cake! Also take the season into account..

how many guests do you need to serve

How many guests do you need to serve?

How many pieces does the cake need to be cut into? Are you serving a separate dessert or is

the cake to be dessert?

Choose a very reputable bakery or a highly recommended cake decorator who can demonstrate

a portfolio of previous work.

Like with your wedding gown, your Wedding Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist you need to plan

well in advance for your cake to be a success. Be specific about what you want. Taste in

advance too!
