The Great Mascara Debate

Mascara is one of the most popular types of makeup, and even if “going bare”, most girls and women

will take a moment to enhance their lashes before facing the world. Mascara helps achieve a youthful

appearance with larger eyes. Used to lengthen, thicken, darken and define, well-applied mascara opens

the eyes, and long, dark eyelashes are almost universally considered to be attractive. Women have been

enhancing their lashes since prehistory, and there are records from six thousand years ago of women

and men using kohl to darken their eyes, lashes and brows. This was not only for beauty; it was used to

mask the eyes and was believed to ward off evil spirits. Is More Expensive Better? Here we come to the

great mascara debate. Is high end, more expensive mascara better than its budget counterparts? What

are the pros and cons of each? And which brands are truly lash-worthy?

time and again the winner of polls relating

Time and again, the winner of polls relating to some of the best mascaras on the market are Maybelline

Great Lash Mascara and Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara. Do Maybelline and its budget-friendly

counterparts like Burjois Volume 1 Second Mascara measure up to the designer brands? You pay extra

for designer brands because: You are paying for the label – which is simply a status symbol You are

paying for designer packaging –which looks fantastic but doesn’t necessarily reflect the product itself

Designer mascaras may offer better applicators Designer brands may offer better pigmentation and

staying power Ingredients are rarely a factor in designer makeup pricing. Formulations are similar

between brands and across price points. A designer brand offers both premium pigmentation and brush

type, and this is where the difference lies. Designer brands of mascara tend to offer larger, softer

applicators. This gives better results when volumising. Budget brands available in the pharmacy or

similar usually have thinner brushes; these are great for lengthening. It all depends on your result

priority and why you are using the mascara. Keep in mind too, that using an eyelash curler with a good

budget brand mascara can achieve results equal to using a designer brand mascara. What you Need to

Know About Mascara Mascara has a short lifespan – just a few months. It them needs to be discarded as

it can harbour bacteria which can have horrific results on eyes. You can, however, keep and clean the

wand to use in future as an eyebrow spoolie. Mascara should be removed every night, and lashes should

be included in your moisturising regimen. Also, avoid using waterproof mascara every day. It can make

lashes weaker over time.

there is certainly some makeup that warrants

There is certainly some makeup that warrants spending more for a better quality product and result.

When you consider that mascara should be discarded at least every six months (three to five months is

the average lifespan of mascara), it can seem difficult to justify spending money on high end brands for

this product. Of course, your Professional Wedding Makeup Artist uses top quality products which are

created to be superior to any product you will purchase off the shelf. The great news is that, for your

own personal makeup kit, whether you wish to spend up big for luxury mascara brands, or save money

by choosing a less expensive product, you can find premium mascara in your budget range.
