  1. Guido finds out about Willpower Guido’s friend Ferruccio tells Guido about Schopenhauer. ‘Schopenhauer says that with willpower you can do anything.’

  2. Roberto Benigni uses Mid-shots of Guido’s fingers Whenever Guido is using willpower, Roberto Benigni (the director uses a mid shot. This shows us both Guido’s face – and the effort that he is putting into willing things, and also Guido’s fingers. They quiver, to let us know he is willing something to happen.

  3. Guido’s willpower wins over Dora. At the opera, Guido repeats “Look at me Princess. Turn around… turn around… turn around… A close up of Dora, shows that she does turn to look at him. Benigni suggests that Guido’s willpower has forced her to turn around. Later she ‘turns’ to him and turns away from her fiance (who Guido doesn’t like)

  4. Guido again uses willpower to save his son from a German guard dog When Guido and Joshua are escaping from the Nazi camp at the end of WWII, Guido hides Joshua in a box. A dog snifs Joshua out. Guido, who is watching from a distance, again uses willpower, repeating ‘Go away dog’. Again, due to the finger quivering, we know this is willpower. If we missed this, then when Guido says ‘Thank you Ferruccio’ (who has told him about willpower) confirms that Guido puts this saving down to willpower.
