  3. Parkway North High School Mission Statement The mission of PNH is to develop self-directed, creative, critical thinkers who are socially responsible people prepared for an ever-changing world.

  4. What’s on your mind? • With regard to your work as a leader at North, write down your greatest hope and your worst fear for the school year? • “Whip Around” • 1 minute sharing from everyone • Questions, comments, patterns observed • Notes taken/Note cards collected

  5. Who’s in the room? Why does it matter? • Compass Points: N-S-E-W • Read the signs and stand near the sign that best describes your personal style • As a group, answer the questions about your direction on the paper (10 minutes) • Processing the activity (10 minutes) • How do you interpret the distribution among the ‘directions’? • What is the best combination for a group to have? Does it matter? • How can you avoid being driven crazy by another ‘direction’? • How might you use this with others?

If…then… • If we want to foster curiosity, then what will we see students doing in classrooms and then, what are the conditions the adults must provide for that to happen? • If we want to foster self-directed learners, then what will we see students doing in classrooms? • If we want to foster creative, critical thinkers, then… • If we want to foster socially responsible people, then what do we see in the classrooms and in the halls, on the court/field/etc? • If we want students to be prepared for an ever changing world, then what will we see in the classrooms? • If we want to accomplish mission, how do we measure these things so we know if we are on the right track?

  8. Looking at Assessments Do we measure what is important or that which is easy to grade? Do we know what a course grade represents? Is it important for us to know what grades represent? What is the gap between what we say we value (our mission) and what we are measuring (our current assessments)?
