IRS 990-N Forms Annual Electronic Filing Requirement for Small Exempt Organizations — Form 990-N (e-Postcard) Most small tax-exempt organizations whose annual gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less are required to electronically submit Form 990-N, also known as the e-Postcard, unless they choose to file a complete Form 990 or Form 990-EZ instead. If you do not file your e-Postcard on time, the IRS will send you a reminder notice. There is no penalty assessment for late filing the e-Postcard, but an organization that fails to file required e-Postcards (or information returns – Forms 990 or 990-EZ) for three consecutive years will automatically lose its tax-exempt status. The revocation of the organization’s tax-exempt status will not take place until the filing due date of the third year. www.irs.gov

IRS FORM 990-N • How to File • http://epostcard.form990.org • When you access the system, you will leave the IRS site and file the e-Postcard with the IRS through Urban Institute. • You will need to create a log-in using the chapter’s Tax ID number (if you don’t know this or have it recorded somewhere, contact the NALS Resource Center) • The form must be completed and filed electronically. • There is no paper form. • DEADLINE TO FILE IS SEPTEMBER 15TH * • *Or the 15th of the month on the 5th month following the end of the fiscal year

  10. IRS FORM 990-N Information You Will Need to File the e-Postcard The e-Postcard is easy to complete. All you need is eight items of basic information about your chapter. Employer identification number (EIN), also known as a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) Tax year Chapter’s legal name (“NALS Inc”) and local mailing address Any other names the chapter uses (this would be your chapter name; aka your “DBA” name) Name and address of a principal officer (president or treasurer) Web site address, if your chapter has one Confirmation that the chapter’s annual gross receipts are $50,000 or less If applicable, a statement that the chapter has terminated or is terminating (going out of business)

LEADERSHIP TIPS • PRESIDENT: General Duties • Preside at all meetings of the association and conduct meetings according to the established rules of parliamentary procedures • Appoint all appointive officers and chairs, subject to required approval • Serve as an ex-officio member of all committees, except the nominating committee • Oversee the work of officers and committee chairs NALS Officer Training Toolkit: Book 3 – Leadership, p. 2

EFFECTIVE MEETING STRATEGIES • CALL TO MEETING • AGENDAS • Prepare and share in advance • Keep your meeting focused • Stick to a timeline • MINUTES & REPORTS • Share previous meeting minutes in advance • If possible, share written reports in advance • Try to turn around meeting minutes soon after PREPARING FOR MEETINGS

EFFECTIVE MEETING STRATEGIES • AGENDAS • A thought out agenda helps save time • An agenda is a list of items which helps the group that is meeting achievethe specific goals of the association • Organize intelligently:- Start with most important items- Handle short, urgent items first- Concentrate on fewer more important items- Keep items in logical order, when possible • Establish ground rules and time limits ahead of time PREPARING FOR MEETINGS

EFFECTIVE MEETING STRATEGIES • TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE • Start/end on time; stragglers will learn to be on time in the future • Be courteous of schedules; try to schedule meetings for daysand times that work for everyone • Follow an agenda & monitor time • Be prepared to “table” things for another day • If an item requires a special meeting, schedule one CONDUCTING MEETINGS

EFFECTIVE MEETING STRATEGIES • ENSURE PARTICIPATION • SECRETARY’S ROLE: • Take attendance • Record minutes of discussions • Record decisions & actions; motions & passage of motions • Record & review “action item” commitments;if a board member commits to doing something, record the “who” “what” and “by when” CONDUCTING MEETINGS

EFFECTIVE MEETING STRATEGIES • PRIOR TO ADJOURNING: • Use the “Rule of 3”- solicit input at least 3 times to be sure everyone has a chance to speak • Re-state commitments & deadlines • AFTER MEETINGS: • Evaluate the meeting- Adapt an evaluation formMeetings that Work!, Chang and Kehoe EVALUATING MEETINGS
