  2. Objectives • By the end of this unit the student will: • Define NANDA • Briefly describe the 5 steps of the nursing process • List 5 characteristics of the nursing process • Briefly describe benefits of the nursing process

  3. Delivering Quality Care Nursing is: • Both a science and an art • Concerned with individuals • Physical • Psychological • Sociological • Cultural • Spiritual

  4. Nursing Profession Florence Nightingale-1859 • “Nursing has been limited to signify little more than the administration of medicine and the application of poultices (external medicinal preparation)” • In early years nursing did not seek to control its own practice

  5. Nursing Profession (cont.) American Nurses Association • 1980-First Social Policy Statement that defined nursing as “the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual or potential health problems” • 1995-Nursing Social Policy Statement revised & updated to acknowledge social, professional, and scientific changes

  6. Nursing Profession (cont.) 2003 – Nursing Social Policy Statement revised Statement recognizes nursing’s commitment to meeting broader needs of society and need to adapt to current healthcare environment

  7. The Nursing Process • North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) published the classification of nursing diagnosis • Provides an orderly problem-solving approach for providing nursing care • A process used in daily life

  8. The Nursing Process A Five Step Process: • Assessment • Diagnosis • Planning • Implementation • Evaluation

  9. Characteristics of the Nursing Process • Systematic • Dynamic • Interpersonal • Goal oriented • Universally applicable

  10. Dynamic & Interrelated • Comprised of five separate terms, but terms are interrelated • Continuous circle of thoughts and actions which continue throughout client’s healthcare system encounter • Dynamic and cyclical

  11. Benefits of the Nursing Process: • Provides an organizing framework for meeting needs • Focuses attention on individual human responses to a given health situation • Provides an organized, systematic method of problem solving • Promotes active involvement of the client

  12. Effectively Using the Nursing Process • Knowledge of science and theory in a multi-disciplinary sense • Creativity • Adaptability • Intelligence • Interpersonal skills • Competent technical skills • Commitment to profession

Summary • Nursing is an art & science that considers the client in a holistic manner • Nursing process is an orderly problem solving approach to nursing care • Consists of 5 steps: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation • Nursing process is a dynamic process that has evolved to meet needs of the client in a changing healthcare environment client
