4. Nursing Profession Florence Nightingale-1859 • “Nursing has been limited to signify little more than the administration of medicine and the application of poultices (external medicinal preparation)” • In early years nursing did not seek to control its own practice

5. Nursing Profession (cont.) American Nurses Association • 1980-First Social Policy Statement that defined nursing as “the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual or potential health problems” • 1995-Nursing Social Policy Statement revised & updated to acknowledge social, professional, and scientific changes

6. Nursing Profession (cont.) 2003 – Nursing Social Policy Statement revised Statement recognizes nursing’s commitment to meeting broader needs of society and need to adapt to current healthcare environment

7. The Nursing Process • North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) published the classification of nursing diagnosis • Provides an orderly problem-solving approach for providing nursing care • A process used in daily life

8. The Nursing Process A Five Step Process: • Assessment • Diagnosis • Planning • Implementation • Evaluation

9. Characteristics of the Nursing Process • Systematic • Dynamic • Interpersonal • Goal oriented • Universally applicable

10. Dynamic & Interrelated • Comprised of five separate terms, but terms are interrelated • Continuous circle of thoughts and actions which continue throughout client’s healthcare system encounter • Dynamic and cyclical

11. Benefits of the Nursing Process: • Provides an organizing framework for meeting needs • Focuses attention on individual human responses to a given health situation • Provides an organized, systematic method of problem solving • Promotes active involvement of the client
