Hønsehauk: Majestic Bird of Prey

Hønsehauken, a member of the hawk family, weighs around 600-1100 grams with a wingspan of 100-130 cm. Its plumage ranges from gray-brown to white with dark stripes and spots. The young birds have a more mottled appearance. This bird is a skilled hunter, rarely seen soaring, and mostly observed darting through dense forests. While common, it is still a remarkable sight. In Norway, it resides in dense forests across the country. This bird is found across the northern hemisphere as a resident, migratory, or wandering species.   1. En fugleart i haukefamilien. Hannen på ca. 600–1100 gram er bare halvparten så tung som hunnen på ca. 900–2000 gram. Vingespenn ca. 100–130 cm. Oversiden gråbrun, undersiden hvit med smale, mørke tverrstriper hos fullvoksen fugl. Inntil ca. to år gammel har ungfuglen mer gulhvit underside med langsgående, mørke dråpeflekker. Lang, gul og naken tars. Relativt brede og korte vinger, og lang hale med mørke tverrbånd. En relativt vanlig dagrovfugl, men sees likevel sjelden. Sees omtrent aldri i seilflukt (motsatt fjell- og musvåk), men skyter under jakt lynfort frem fra tett skog i lav flukt. I Norge har den tilhold i tett skog over det meste av landet.
