Objective/Warm-up The students will explain the how the cold war spreads by summarizing the events of the 1950’s Announcement: There were be a bi-weekly World History Review Session in Mr. Gregg’s Room. The Chapter 19 test will be Friday, April 8 Warm-up: Examine the map on page 667 and answer the following: 1. Why could the Allies not deliver food to West Berlin by land? 2. Why was the fate of Berlin important to the Allies and the Soviets?

  4. Korean Conflict U.S. intervened when North Korea invaded South Korea Aim was to stop the spread of communism 38th parallel kept as border between North and South Korea Arms Race U.S. and Russia continued to build bigger bombs Deterrence Soviets launched Sputnik in 1957

A Wall in Berlin Nikita Khruschev built the Berlin Wall to stop the flow of East Berliners into West Berlin Cuban Missile Crisis Cuba became communist in 1959 under Fidel Castro Bay of Pigs 1961 Soviets began shipping nuclear weapons to Cuba to point at U.S. U.S. agreed to not invade Cuba and Russia stopped sending missiles to Cuba Vietnam and the Domino Theory U.S. goal to stop the spread of communism into South Vietnam domino theory-if 1 fell to communism, others would fall
