  1. CTSA Education Steering Committee UpdatePresented to: CTSA PI Web ConferenceMarch 18, 2008 Sherine E. Gabriel M.D., M.Sc. William J. and Charles H. Mayo Professor Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology Co-PI & Director of Education, Mayo Clinic CTSA Chair, CTSA Education Steering Committee

  2. Outline • Development of Core Competencies for PhD and MS programs in Clinical and Translational Research • National Meeting • Succession Planning

  3. Core Competencies in Clinical and Translational Research • NCRR Workshop: January 30 - 31, 2008 • Attendees - NCRR funded education and career development programs • CTSA • iDEA • RCMI • AAMC • Other federal agencies • Motivation and Goals

  4. NCRR WORKSHOP FOR DEFINING CORE COMPETENCIES in CLINICAL & TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH:Introduction Sherine E. Gabriel M.D., M.Sc. William J. and Charles H. Mayo Professor Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology Co-PI & Director of Education, Mayo Clinic CTSA Chair, CTSA Education Steering Committee

  5. Why we are here? • The success of the CTSA education component is essential for achieving the overall CTSA goal to transform Academic Medicine in America • A necessary first step is the creation and nurturing of a unique academic discipline and national scientific community of like-minded scholars and scientists

  6. Transform Medicine Through Discovery Preemptive Predictive Personalized Participatory

  7. CTS Education: A central element of this transformation Challenges: • shortage of clinical research workforce is well recognized & it has not changed; • clinical research education is complex and central to any effort in increasing the workforce; • medical schools' orientation have largely been on basic sciences, focus on translation will require major changes on how students at all levels are educated and trained; • the science of CTS must be defined if it is to become mainstream medical school activity: only educational programs (e.g., PhD, MS etc) can do this

  8. Challenges • To address these challenges we must: • Build an academic home in our institutions and a national scientific community of CTR students, trainees, scholars and scientists (mentors) • Create a new discrete academic discipline that defines members of this community

  9. But what are the core elements that define a Clinical & Translational scientist?

  10. Workshop GoalsWhat we will try to do today… • Begin to identify those few basic common elements that define clinical and translational scientists and clinical and translational science as a discrete discipline • “Core Competencies” • SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES/BEHAVIORS

  11. Workshop GoalsWhat we will not do today …… • Dictate how individual institutions shall construct their own programs • Define sub-tracks or themes eg. T1, T2, T3 • Translate ‘competencies’ into specific curricular components

  12. Conclusions • CTSA Education must prepare the next generation of investigators to conduct CTR that will address the healthcare challenges of today and transform US Academic Medicine • In order to build a scientific community CTSA Education must create a recognizable scientific discipline • A common core set of ‘competencies’ is the necessary 1st step

  13. Summary of Competencies Discussion

  14. Core Competencies for a Doctorate Degree in Clinical/Translational Science • Identify major clinical/public health problems and relevant research questions • Identify/interpret/critique literature/assess state of knowledge regarding problem • Design and write protocol for clinical/translational research study • Prepare scientific proposal for peer review • Conduct research project • Analyze and interpret data • Informatics DRAFT

  15. Core Competencies for a Doctorate Degree in Clinical/Translational Science VIII. Conduct of responsible research IX. Communicate/disseminate/translate research into action or policy/technology transfer X. Professionalism and teamwork XI. Cultural competency XII. Discover new knowledge and/or research method XIII. Demonstrate an ability to teach and mentor • Collaborate effectively with other disciplines DRAFT

  16. Core Competencies for a Master’s Degree in Clinical/Translational Science Prerequisite: Competence in a basic science or clinical discipline • Identify major clinical/public health problems and relevant translational research problems • Observational and experimental methods and study design • Measurement-laboratory, clinical, and population research methods • Data management and informatics • Data analysis DRAFT

  17. Core Competencies for a Master’s Degree in Clinical/Translational Science • Scientific communication and dissemination skills • Conducting ethically responsible research • Population diversity in clinical/translational research • Leadership, management and cross-disciplinary teamwork DRAFT

  18. Core Competencies for a Master’s Degree in Clinical/Translational Science Next Steps: • Continue to discuss, refine, iterate at National Meeting • Integrate MS and PhD competencies into one multi-level document • Solicit broad input within & outside CTSA • Period of public comment • Revise, revise, revise • Submit for publication
