objectives
Objectives:

Students Will:

  • Understand how the circulatory system works.
  • Describe role of the circulatory system in cellular respiration.

Homework:

  • Complete Part 2 in your packet.

Recognize and explain that human beings, like other organisms have complex body systems of cells, tissues, and organs that interact to support an organisms growth and survival.

VSC Content Standard:

-Describe and explain that the complex set of systems found in multicellular organisms are made up of different kinds of tissues and organs which are, in turn, composed of differentiated cells-Select several body systems and explain the role of cells, tissues, and organs in the systems selected that effectively carry out a vital function for the organism, such as:Obtaining food and providing energy, Defense, Reproduction, Waste Removal, Breathing

lesson question
Lesson Question:

What role does the circulatory system have in cellular respiration?

engage your thinking what can blood do for you
Engage your thinking:What can BLOOD do for you?

What does your circulatory system have in common with the United Parcel Service (UPS)?

slide6

Engage your thinking:What can BLOOD do for you?

  • Like the UPS, your circulatory system is in the business of delivering things.
  • Your blood provides the service of carrying materials to and from your cells 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, 165 days a year.
  • The UPS carries packages…your blood carries materials such as oxygen, sugars, and waste products.
explore how the circulatory system works
Explore:How the circulatory system works…

  • We know that your circulatory system uses blood to transport materials around the body, but how and why does blood move through your body? Use the website above and your books (pp.100-106) to answer the following:

1. What does the blood carry to the cells?

2. What does the blood carry away from the cells?

3. Where does loop one carry blood?

4. Where does loop two carry blood?

explore types of blood vessels
Explore:Types of blood vessels…
  • We know that your heart and blood vessels move blood around throughout your body. But are there different types of blood vessels?
  • Explore the website below and your books (pp.107-111) to complete the chart showing differences in the three types of blood vessels.
  • As you go, think about what type of muscle tissue makes up these structures:

check point levels of organization for the circulatory system
Check Point …Levels of organization for the circulatory system
  • The main function of the circulatory system is to transport materials to and from the cells in your body.
  • The circulatory system is made up of organs such as the heart and blood vessels (also your blood!).
  • These organs are made up of cardiac muscle tissue (heart), smooth muscle tissue (vessels) and connective tissue (blood).
  • This tissue is made up of specialized cells that have different jobs (animal cells).

Use your text (pp.104-106) to complete the chart showing the path that blood flows as it circulates through the body.

explain movement of raw materials and waste products
Explain: Movement of raw materials and waste products…

1. What materials do you or your cells need in order to stay alive?

2. How do the materials you need get to your cells?

3. How does your food get from the intestines to the cells?

4. Where does oxygen come from?

extension why carry around all of this stuff
Extension…Why carry around all of this stuff?
  • What materials does blood take to the cells? Why ?
  • What materials does blood carry away from the cells?

Why?
