  2. USA – A Diverse Country and Population Aim: • Examine the composition of the US population today. Success Criteria You can identify the five main ethnic groups in the USA today.

  3. 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered the West Indies. Amerigo Vespucci proved that there was a whole new land further west. British settlers soon arrived to conquer this ‘New World’. The first 13 areas or colonies where people lived included Virginia, New York and North Carolina.

  4. From 1775-1783 the American Wars of Independence took place – the 13 colonies want to be free of British rule and be independent. On the 4th of July 1776 the 13 colonies signed the Declaration of Independence. ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness’.

  5. In 1777 the American Flag was adopted. The 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies and the 50 stars represent the 50 American states. America then became known as the United States of America or the USA.

  7. The US Population – Just over 315 million in 2013. Millions % Whites 208m 66% Hispanics 47m 15% African Americans (Blacks) 38m 12% Asians 13m 4% Native Americans 3m 1% Two or More Races 3m 1% Whites make up the majority of the population. All other groups are known as ethnic minorities.

  8. The US Population Key Word: Ethnic Minority A group of people who differ in race, colour, religion or culture from the main ethnic group of the country they live in.

  9. The US Population Can you think of famous Americans from the five different ethnic groups? Whites African Americans/Blacks Hispanics Asians Native Americans.

  10. Theories of Immigration Melting Pot No matter how people in the USA start out – Cuban, African American, Chinese – once they have been in the USA for a while they become ‘American’ and lose their individual identity.

  11. Theories of Immigration Salad Bowl Different ethnic groups mix together to create an American society, but still keep their identities and cultures. A Chinese immigrant will still be partly Chinese, but will also be ‘partly’ American.

The Future US Population • The fastest growing group is Hispanics – this is due to their high birth rate (they have larger families than other groups) and large numbers entering the country each year. • By 2060 whites will be around 42% of the population and the Hispanic population will have doubled to 30%. • Within another 50 years could the Hispanic population be the main ethnic group in the USA?

  19. Why Did People Migrate To The USA? Aim: To identify the reasons why people come to the USA – PUSH factors and PULL factors. Success Criteria: You can name three push factors and three pull factors.

  21. The American Dream All of the pull factors are often called the American Dream. This is the idea that any American citizen, however poor their background, can aim to succeed by working hard.
