Off Aaron Debbink Oak Hills High School • The Challenge • Design an entertaining activity for our Classroom Off-the-Grid day that can be powered using only the electricity stored from a bicycle generator. • The Problem • In our modern world many people “consume” energy without an appreciation or awareness of the amount they use.As the population across the globe continues to rise, we need to find ways to rely more on renewable sources of energy. These sources of energy will only be viable if we can find ways to use this energy more efficiently. This design unit aims to give students an appreciation for and awareness of the electrical energy they “consume”. the Classroom • Guiding Questions • How can we determine the amount of energy that electronic devices use? • What is a Watt? • How much power can an average person produce while riding the bicycle generator? • What are students interested in doing for fun? • How do we estimate the amount of time we need to use the bike to charge the battery?
