  3. Kate is at her apartment door; Ana stops to chat as she walks past. Qes: Why did Ana say “Welcome back” to Kate? Ana: Kate! Welcome back! Kate: Thanks. Ana: You look tired. Kate: Ahhh…I’m exhausted… Ana: What happened? Listening Script(Video)

  4. Kate: What didn’t happen? First, I left my hotel in New York at 6:00 this morning. But I forgot my briefcase (公文包), so I had to go back and get it. • Ana: Oh, Kate… • Kate: And then I missed my flight… • Ana: Ohhh… • Kate: So I had to wait two hours for the next flight. It was so frustrating! • Ana: I bet.

  5. Kate: And I sat next to this lady who talked and talked, and this little kid kept kicking my seat! I almost lost my mind! • Ana: Oh, no! That’sterrible. Where’s your suitcase? (Ask the students to tell the answer) • Kate: Well, when I arrived, my bag wasn’t at the baggage claim (领取行李的地方)! • Ana: That’s SO annoying, I can’t believe it! Well, at least you made it!

  6. Ana: By the way, what were you doing in New York? • Kate: I was there on business. Our head office is in New York, and I was at a national meeting. • Ana: Oh, I see. Did that go well? • Kate: It was great. Lots of interesting presentations. So much new stuff. I am so-o-o brain-dead now! • Ana: Well, get some rest, and I hope they find your suitcase. • Kate: Thanks, Ana.

  7. NEXT Listening Culture Notes • 1. Friends often talk about problems they have had. The listener often nods and gives short “supportive” responses such as: oh,no, I know, That’s terrible, or I can’t believe it. • (How many responses sentences you can heard from Ana and Kate’s dialogue.) • 2. The head office is main office for the company.

  8. Answer the following questions: • 1. what’s the conversation about? • 2. how many ways did Ana response when Kate was talking about her travel prebloms? • 3. How to express that you are very tired or very angry?

  9. Further Study of the Vocabulary • exhausted: dog-tired, worn out, whipped • ①extremely tired 筋疲力尽的 • E.g.1: What an exhausting day! I’m completely exhausted. 今天真累人! 我疲惫不堪了. • ②used up 耗尽的, 枯竭的 • E.g.2: exhausted tea 泡得无味的茶叶 • E.g.3: My patience is exhausted. 　　　　我忍无可忍了．

  10. Exercises: Translate or Make up sentences using the following expressions: • tired: 我累得能睡上一星期。 • I’m so tired I could sleep for a week. • whipped: 他累坏了。 • He was whipped.

  11. Back • worn out: 他打电脑游戏三天三夜没睡觉，弄得筋疲力尽。 • He was worn out after 3 sleepless nights with playing computer games. • dog-tired:我工作了一整天，真是累惨了。 • I'm dog-tired after working the whole day.

  12. miss ①fail to do something 错过，遗漏，错失 e.g. He threw the ball to me, but I missed it and it landed on the ground. 他把球扔给我，但我没接住，球落在了地上。 Exercises: 1.我迟到了，因为我误了公共汽车。 I was late because I missed the bus.

  15. frustrate v.挫败；使挫折，使沮丧 →frustration n. 挫折，失望→frustrating/frustrated adj. 挫败的，沮丧的 I had spent 5 hours to repair my computer, but it still didn’t work. It was so frustrating.

  16. He was frustrated by his poverty. • 他因贫穷而灰心丧气。 • They are so frustrated because of losing the game.

  17. Back • some expressions that have similar meaning: • upsetting/upset 令人心烦意乱的,令人苦恼的 • James was upset because he had lost his ticket.　詹姆斯很烦躁，因为他把车票丢了。 • annoying/annoyed　苦恼的，生气的 • He looked annoyed.他好象不耐烦的样子。 • maddening/mad　叫人恼火的 • Isn‘t that maddening!　真叫人恼火！

  18. lose one’s mind • 1) 十分生气，不能控制怒气 →lose one’s head →lose one’s temper • E.g. She’d never have done such a terrible thing if she hadn’t lost her mind.

  19. Back • 2) 神志不清的，发疯的 →out of one’s mind • e.g. 1. What are you doing? It’s dangerous! Have you lost your mind? 2. She is so old that she is losing her mind.

  20. Other words and expressions • 1. To be delayed: 延迟 • My flight was delayed, so I was stuck at the airport for 2 hours.

  21. I missed the show because we gotcaught in traffic. • 2. to get caught in traffic塞车

  22. 3. weather conditions permitting： 　　如果天气许可的话 • The picnic is on Wednesday, weather conditions permitting.(if the weather permits)

It’s a black Luggage Pro… Yes, it has my name on it… Great, you found it! It’s here? Yes, I do need it tonight… Thank you… The address is 3864 Lake Street. Right… 3864 Lake Street, off of Clement Street, that’s right… apartment 201. how soon will the driver be here?... Ok, good! Yes, thank you. Bye. • [hangs up]

  25. II. Long Conversation & III Spot Dictation • A: So, how was your trip? • B: It was really, really bad. • A: It was bad? But I thought you went to Austria! • B: We did, and I thought it was going to be so much fun, and it was just terrible! • A: Hum. Who did you go with? • B: We went with a whole group of kids, and they were so obnoxious（讨厌的）, and so rude, and so loud, and they… we went to see Mozart’s birthplace…

  26. A: Uh, that sounds like fun. • B: They spit（吐口水） over the balcony. They were having a spitting competition. • A: That is extremely rude. Did you guys get kicked out or anything? • B: We got hold to stop spitting, and then, we went over to a castle, to this beautiful, beautiful castle, and we could have learned all sort of things, and one of the kids pulled out his harmonica（口琴）, and he started playing it, in the castle, while she’s giving the tour. • A: Wow, wow.

B: And the food was horrible, squishy（压扁的）, mushy（湖烂的）, overcooked… carrots and mashed potatoes, but it was all sort of mixed together. • A: Oh, that sounds horrible. • B: And sort of unidentifiable meat. • A: Always a good time… unidentifiable meat, yeah. • B: It was just awful, and plus we didn’t have any free time. We had to stay with our tour group the whole time.

  28. A: I hate when you don’t have a lot of freedom on a vacation. • B: Yes, because I want to go shopping of course! • A: Of course! • B: No shopping. • A: I’m sorry. It sounds awful. • B: Thanks. It cost so much money, too. • A: Bummer（失败）. • B: Yep.
