  3. What is the same • course aims, content and rationale • Advanced Higher Statistics formulae and tables • proportion of level C marks remains at 65% • separate question papers and unstructured answer booklets What is changed • two question papers, instead of one

  4. Course assessment structure Component 1: question paper 1 • number of marks: 30 • duration: 1 hour Component 2: question paper2 • number of marks: 90 • duration: 2 hours 45 minutes Calculators are allowed in both papers.

  5. Comparison of paper 1 and paper 2 Paper 1 will typically contain two questions that give candidates an opportunity to analyse a statistical report and to interpret summary statistics, including those generated by statistical software packages. Paper 2 will be similar in style and structure to the previous single question paper, only shorter in duration by 15 minutes and with 10 fewer marks.

  6. Paper 1 – some more details The statistical report will be no longer than 2 sides of A4, and reading time has been factored in to the duration of paper 1. The calculations and methodology used in the report will be explored through the questions that accompany it. Output from statistical software will be presented in a manner that is ‘generic / brand free’.

  7. Specimen question papers The SQA is publishing specimen question papers as follows: • two different specimen paper 1s • one specimen paper 2. This is intended to further support and clarify the style of paper 1, in particular.

  8. Grading The range of notional scores for each grade in the course assessment will be: • A: 70% - 100% • B: 60% - 69% • C: 50% - 59% • D: 40% - 49%

  9. Guidance on preparing candidates for the course assessment • write all working out clearly and legibly • use correct probability and statistical notation • know the assumptions that underpin techniques and approximations • clearly state the outcome of any hypothesis tests • state the conclusion(s) of any analysis by referring to the context of the question
