  2. Question! What exactly is animal cruelty? Animal cruelty can come in 2 forms -Abuse -Neglect • Abuse concerns the physical harm inflicted upon an animal. Hurting the animal in violent manners such as kicking, setting the animal on fire and forms of mistreatment. • Failure to care for animals/abandonment is the most common form of animal cruelty. Animals are neglected as if they are invisible. Often times food, proper supervision, nurture, and love are not provided to these animals.

Did you know? • The animal Welfare Act of 1966 is the only federal law in America that regulates animal protection. • Animal cruelty laws differ in separate states are apparent through out the United States g, however often times are not considered to be important unless the act of violence is extremely severe. • Idaho, Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi and North Dakota are the worst states to be an animal because laws against animal cruelty are not enforced. Neglecting animals isn’t considered a crime and basic care for the animals, like feeding it isn’t considered necessary. • A child in America is more likely to have a pet than a father.

  4. Large-scale commercial breeding operations that put more importance on profits rather than puppies’ health is called a puppy mill. Puppies are likely to contracts infections as well as kidney and heart diseases from neglect. • “A study conducted by Northeastern University and the Massachusetts SPCA found that people who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against humans. The majority of inmates who are scheduled to be executed for murder at California's San Quentin penitentiary "practiced" their crimes on animals, according to the warden.” • In media-reported animal cruelty cases, dogs—and pit bull-type dogs, in particular—are the most common victims of animal cruelty. Of 1,880 cruelty cases* reported in the media in 2007: • 64.5% (1,212) involved dogs 18% (337) involved cats 25% (470) involved other animals

  6. Ways to be a part of the movement • Talk to people! Word of mouth is quite powerful especially amongst family/friends. People tend to forget that animals feel like humans do and that it would be unacceptable if violence like that was inflicted on them. • Start/join a group that acknowledges these issues. Hunter College has a club called “Animal Behavior and Conservation club” or ABC. • Make an event that involves games/food but still concerns the issue. People will be more receptive the events appeals to some tastes too. • Post flyers!

Organizations • Humane Society of the United States- uses funds to fight animal abuses, lobbies against animal cruelty in the media, like television and movies. • American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty toward Animals (ASPCA) word towards educating people about the topic and donating money to shelters. • People for Ethical Treatment of Animals(PETA) advocates that animals are neither property nor food.
